Here are a few little things ive done to improve the performance with my new g1s.

    1. Removed ASUS Data Security Manager- would cause music/mouse cursor to stutter when right clicking on icons in Vista.

    2. Updated Realtek sound drivers from Realtek's website- Old drivers/software causing minor graphical/sound skipping in World of Warcraft every once in awhile (only game i tried). New driver install automatically removed the sound utility while updating the drivers and fixed the problem.

    3. Turned off Vista Automatic System Restore (Vista issue)- This one is personal preference. With only 111 GB available space on my HD this utility was using over 20 gb in automatic backups right out of the box. Thats a little much for me.

    4. When using the ASUS Restore DVD, dont push the restart computer button that pops up (about 15 minutes in) or the install will fail.

Thats about it, my g1s is running smooth as silk after a few days of minor fixes. just thought i'd share what i found with you all. If anyone has any other suggestions please post them.

also, does anyone know if theres a way to change the side lights from blinking to static? I would like them a lot more if they werent blinking like an answering machine.

It would be appreciated if I can get a link to the dound driver download page. Also, which addresses the problem with sound getting drowned out by static? The sound drivers, or the ASUS DSM?

I haven't had that issue. I would try updating the drivers but it's probably a unique issue due to something else

Thanks for the Asus Data security manager tip. I was going through some .mp3 files, and it was doing that 1/4 second of static thing when I would right click on something.
Now that I just uninstalled data security mgr, it doesn't do that any more.

    Yay!

Thanks for the uninstalling ASUS Data Security Manager tip.

Btw, does anybody know any programs similar to ASUS Data Security Manager? I though it was an interesting program for hiding files.

Oh. Fantastic. Now I can't get any sound through the speakers. But when I plug the headphones in, it's fine and dandy. In the playback pane of the sound settings my computer still says the speakers are making sound, even though they're not. I plug the headphones in, the readings don't change, but all of a sudden I'm getting magical sound.

    :(

EDIT: The problem is the Realtek HD Audio Manager. When I install it speakers don't work but headphones do, and the other way for when it's not installed.

And yes I just went back to the way it was, with headphones working, AND SPEAKERS NOT. =/

...And now I've reinstalled the drivers, and the speakers work, but not the headphones? :S

I did the sound driver update. After rebooting it took a really long time find the drivers. Now I'm showing Microsoft sound drivers being used on the device manager. I didn't check before. Did something go wrong? I am getting sound fine.

When I first did ran the install, it apparently uninstalled it and Windows installed drivers for me. But with that the headphone jack doesn't work. Install the R170 again, and the sound stops working on the speakers, but works on the headphones. Real confusing. :p

I've restored to before the installation. Under speakers in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, on the right it says "Analog Back Panel" and has one circlly thing. With R170 installed, it has 3 circles. I don't know how it's relavent but I'm sure it is since it seems to be the only difference.

Did you unzip the download file before running setup? Not sure if that makes a difference but the video drivers did a similar thing for me

edit: i just checked my device manager and mine show microsoft too. they are working fine though with no sound glitches like before.

It's not right, it shouldn't revert to the MS ones. What I ended up doing is unzipping the zip and doing a manual update. Went into device manager and manually told it where the drivers were. Kind of reminds me of dealing with Win95/98/ME really. I'm not sure why the drivers install from Realtek sucks so bad.

When you run the 1700 drivers' setup.exe the first time all it does is uninstalls the previous version, and asks you to reboot. The configuring that it does is actually the removing of the old drivers, and somehow it automatically installs basic drivers, which you will get sound, but you cannot do other things like use your mic and stuff.

What you have to do after you reboot is to run the setup.exe file again and it'll install the 1700 drivers and it'll ask you to reboot one more time.

After that, you'll now have the new driver and it'll work exactly how it did before, but no sound skipping.
