if idle, or web browsing my cpus are around 47-49C, but the second i do anything else( a game, install something, itunes) it jumps anywhere from 51-56C i can feel the heat coming up through the keys sometimes, and the back around the power plug in is hot enough to cook with. When installing,t he whole right side gets ridiculously hot.( i am using Speedfan)

Is this unusual? or is this typical?

    Thanks

thats sounds pretty normal. you also needs to take account of ambient temperature, and that is the CORE TEMPERATURE of ur PC, which tend to get hotter than the actual CPU temperature, and also it does not indicate ur actual computer temperature.

to put it in perspective; if u think that temperature is hot, try getting first generation macbook pro, with temperature ranging from around 60-90 degrees celcius! and with that alumunium body, the bottom part feels like a frying pan!

Those temperature readings you report are within the expected range. Keep in mind you have a powerful computer!

You should see my computer when I don't clean it for a while... the bottom gets so hot I can probably give my thigh a first degree burn on warm days.

That's normal, if not a bit low for notebooks, especially running Vista. Right now, idling with some web surfing, I'm at around 49-54, depending on what I'm doing(I have about 10 tabs open on FF and half a dozen programs running in the background.

    thanks for the responses!

Given these are normal temperatures for your notebook, they will, logically, not affect life negatively relative to other notebooks of the same type.

In absolute terms, just running your notebook affects its life. :) Usually, positively (i.e., regularly used machines survive longer than machines that are only functioning rarely).

Don't worry about your temps, they are fine, just enjoy your notebook.

no ur computer is running very normally, it is a bit cool for a notebook in fact. if CPU heat is 50-60 is all u see, then u should not be ever be worried about heat causn negative long term damage by a long shot.

but for harddisk, it is best to keep it under 40. but thats another story, and by the looks of things, u should have not worry about that. (manufacturer don't usually put harddisk close to CPU/GPU, even if its close, remeber that the 50-60 temperature u see is the core temperature, not the outside temperature of the processor)

Asus has not had a single laptop that was "too hot" out of the box as long as i can remember. They like any other can get too hot after alot of use after lint builds up in the radiator. Asus and mos tother brands do have alot of users that make posts starting with "my brand new asus is too hot". It may be an inherent defect with the user :)

I'm getting roughly 63 while gaming (call of duty 2, City of heroes) i bought a fan cooler but it seems to be doing nothing.it pulls heat aways, but as far as i understand the G1s has no fans on the bottom so it's kinda pointless.

Yeah, usually ASUS notebooks have exhausts on the side or back. Some have intakes on the bottom, so pulling air from intakes can at best help by recirculating; in the worst case it will do harm because the fan struggles with the notebook cooler to suck air (but I'm no expert on fluid dynamics so I couldn't tell you for sure which of the two is the case or if a third situation :) )

Watch out, NHC reads about 10-20° more than i get using Speedfan.
My G1s normally has 40-42°C within Speedfan when idling or normal Windows usage. Haven't recorded it when gaming though (i guess its about 60-70° ;). I am using a Zalman Notebook Cooler.

Hmm NHC does read hotter than Speed Fan, idle Speed fan says 41 and 42, while NHC says 57. What's going on here....

    I would bet on NHC.

Are you sure they're both using the Celsius scale?

Try NBProbe from ASUS to get the "official" temps.

Or simply check the GPU properties under the Advanced settings in the desktop properties. (at least in XP)
