Hi everyone,
Ok... I hope this is the correct place to post my question...
Anyway, I've learned a lot of Asus through this forum. I've also seen a few great Asus laptop myself. Asus seems to be considered as kind of a "premium" brand while Acer was criticized for its qualities in the past.
So, I just want know what you guys how 5920G compare to G1s in terms of quality and perhaps some other aspects. Please don't comment on looks since it's based on personal opinion, and I already know that some people say that 5920G looks like a toilet seat.![]()
The reason for my question is because that while 5920G is very similar to G1s in specifications, it really receives very little attention at this site compare to G1s. And I'm just really curious why many would choose G1s instead of 5920G... I know there is difference in the screen and processor... But suppose you can get 5920G with T7300 for about $1300 in the US. Which one would you choose and why?
Thanks!!

I'm not familiar with the 5920G so I checked the specs online. Mind you this is the Canadian ACER website, and their version of the laptop.. Both of them have much weaker CPU's, and their version of the 8600M GT uses 256mb of GDDR2 memory, compared to GDDR3 of the G1S. So based on those specs alone it isn't as fast.
I also checked out the faster Asia version with "slightly-slower" processor compared to the G1S, and it scored 600+ points less then the G1S in 3dMark06.
It seems like some of them also come with a HD-DVD player, which is a waste of money at the moment in my opinion.
If there's some high-end model I'm missing, then I apologize. If not, get the G1S lol. -

Hey thanks... Yeah you got it right.
Well, the version I'm looking at is without HD DVD player but with T7300 thus bringing the price down to $1250 include tax.
Excuse my stupidity, but does DDR2 and DDR3 really makes a difference?
Well, I wish I can get the G1s but it is just too expensive. The black carbon fiber look is just really intriguing sigh... -
You are right that the G1S would be more expensive in your case. Here in Canada though, we only have crappy versions of the Aspire, and Dell laptops with similar hardware run around the same price (a bit cheaper now with sales).
$1250 for those specs is very impressive. I would definitely consider buying it. The G1S is more of a gaming machine replacement. You get about 2 and 1/2 hours battery with the power saving modes, and it weighs 10+kg with the battery. Personally I wanted a desktop replacement along with good gaming performance so the G1S was the best choice.
*Also one more note. The G1S comes with a backpack worth almost $100 CAD, and a MX518 gaming mouse.. Not only that but both have custom designs/graphics to match the G1S. So it was a huge value there. -
I know you mentioned it, but:
"CrystalBrite™ TFT LCD, 1280 x 800 pixel resolution"
That is crappy resolution on a 15.4" screen. -

Actually I considered that myself already. Currently I'm using inspiron 6000 with WSXGA. However, personally I found WSXGA to be quite stressful for my eyes after hours of usage. 20in or above with WSXGA is the least my eyes can accept.

Even though the aspire has lower resolution the screen looks better in my opinion.

I agree with you that design is a matter of opinion. G1S is a little expensive for a slightly better CPU, GPU and warranty. (2 years compared to 1 year intl i think). You should go and check how the 2 laptops perform in things like 3dmark06 and FEAR and compare.
Another thing people missed out is the sound quality. I've never heard either speakers live before, but i think the 5920 might have better sound quality due to the subwoofer. (again this is just speculation) -

I'm not really a gamer, but I do many video intensive tasks nonetheless.
Are any of the commonly played 3D games free by the way? -
You are comparing a very high quality product (the Asus G1S - I have doubts about the styling though) with a notebook that has the worst quality of anything costing over $700.
I saw both at Best Buy, side by side, and the difference was amazing. The Acer looks like a toilet seat, has a weird keyboard layout, the worst mouse buttons I have ever used, plastic quality I would appalled to find on a $500 Averatec or Gateway, horrible keyboard, etc etc. Essentially, the only things that save it are the 8600GT and HD DVD drive. Everything about actually using it sucks.
Either get yourself the G1s, or get a dv6500t with a worse graphics card but much much better quality. -

Well, I saw both machines but I couldn't really do a direct comparison. Though, I don't think the Aspire that THAT bad. The mouse buttons are really stiff and difficult to press, but what's so bad about the plastic? I mean, a lot of high end laptop still uses plastic doesn't it? And at least the plastic used by aspire isn't as bad as dell's. -
Its not the fact that its plastic thats the problem, its the fact that the plastic on it is lower quality than the plastic on the $449 Gateway on the other side of it. The palmrest flexes and creaks worse than any notebook I have seen recently, and it really does feel quite flimsy.
And actually, if you have used any of the recent Dell notebooks (1520/1720, etc) you would not say that. Dell has actually come a long ways in quality, and the 1520 is much better than this Acer. Actually, maybe you should look at the 1520 (or Vostro 1500 at the Dell Small Business store), its reasonably good quality laptop at a great price, and you can get it with the 8600GT. -

Too late...
My dad already bought the 5290G. I will be getting it soon...
Well, I don't really want to buy a Dell after hearing about the delays.
hmmm... I didn't really notice any flexes at BestBuy. Maybe it's because that I'm already accustomed to the creaking and groaning of my inspiron 6000. Perhaps I should go look at the 5920G again. Thanks for the warning!
