My new G2Pc is making an annoying click sound from the harddrive, about 2-3 times per minute, especially when it's not working much.
I've never heard a healthy drive make this sound, but i've had no errors , and i actually think it's supposed to do that.
So im looking for others with G2, or maybe G1, that have the same drive, to know whether they hear the same click sound?

    Harddrive is Seagate ST9160821AS .

When doing the reivew on the G2P, I did not hear any sounds coming from the hard drive, it was quiet, little warmer than most laptop hard drives, but that's it.

I suggest look into what applications you are running which can cause clicking sounds.

For example my desktop clicks a lot when doing Virus scans, it is annoying, but tolerable. So double check the applications running in the background, temporarily remove them from the background and see if that helps, may be there's a particular program that keeps on accesssing the hard drive, thus causing it to click.

I've disabled, or uninstalled, most running programs. I always do that as the first thing when i get a notebook.
And im now sure that the clicking is when the drive is idle only.
I've also now tested the drive with the extended Seatool diagnostic program, with no errors.

I don't think the click happens when the HDD is idle :) I think some windows process (logging / indexing / whoknowswhat) keeps accessing the HDD. Which is not so good - basically it means that the HDD is never idling - but what can you do, it's Windows, you can't expect efficiency out of it :)

This happens on many systems I think. Maybe it's more noticeable in some.

No, idle, as in the drive is spinning, but not reading or writing.
It's not just programs accessing the drive, it's a whole other sound.
It is a bit louder than normal drive access, and sounds like how a bad drive can sound. And there is no flashing of the harddrive led when it clicks.
I just can't get it to fail any tests. And it does seem like im not the only one having this sound.

I have the same HDD Speedy & I haven't heard any sounds yet. I let it run all day yesterday doing various things, (Installing & removing programs), throughout most of the day until 0630 this morning and the hottest the hard drive got was 54 celsius.

People have reported this after upgrading their bios to the latest versions. Have you recently upgraded? I have an A8JS, and definitely notice the same thing. I replaced the HD with a 7200RPM drive and it has gotten better, but thats probably because the new drive is quieter. I still hear it a lot more than I should...when idle.

I have a G1 with the same hard drive model as the one mentioned in the first post. And it makes the same clicking noise described. I actually returned my G1 to the retailer for replacement due to this issue, and the replacement is also making the same clicking sound. I hope there is a solution to this...

EDIT: I didn't do any BIOS updates. Also, the clicking happens in Windows as well as in Linux (dual boot), and even when no OS is loaded. For instance, I *always* get a click just before the "Asus Gaming Series" splash screen when the laptop is booting. Most other times it seems random, but I consistently get a click in that particular situation.

I have an ASUS G2S-B2 and also hear this clicking noise, but only when it in "Battery Saving" or "Quiet Office" modes. You can clearly hear the had drive making a chirp every 5 sec. It's rather annoying.

When I put the notebook to "High Performance" or "Entertainment" mode using splendid, the clicking noise disappears.

    My notebook has a Hitachi 200GB 7200RPM Drive (HTS722020K9SA00)

My other problem is that the notebook usually does not want to go into true suspend mode when in these "High Performance" or "Entertainment" mode. When in "Battery Saving" mode it usually does go into suspend mode, however twice it was going into suspend mode and got stuck with a blank screen not being able to suspend properly and at the end I got a blue screen (of death)

When rebooted, Windows Vista warned about the problem in it's "Problem Reports and Solutions" application and that it's a Vista problem and that there is a fix for it. So I went to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=943899 (An update that improves the performance, responsiveness, and reliability of Windows Vista is available) and after downloading this patch and trying to install it, the patch said that it is not applicable to my computer. Argh.

Both times Windows had to do an extensive checkdisk and fixing to the drive (when crashing going into suspend/sleep mode).

I did upgrade to the latest BIOS (v.209 I believe) so not sure if things started happening after the update. I own the notebook not even a month so it's rather disappointing to not have these functions working properly.

I will probably have to get support from Asus, but was wondering if anyone had similar problems.

    The clicking noise is common.
Doesn't matter the model, company, HD manufacturer.
I already had 2 HD, hitachi and seagate, and both did that noise.
If you browse through this forums you'll find that a lot of people have that problem, like for example here.
I just use HDTune minimized and click is gone; never failed to me.
Or follow the instructions on Dell topic if you want to use NHC.

It looks like a power saving feature of the HDD -- perhaps not implemented quite right...
