How would these machines compare? Which one has the best screen? For the W2Pc the specs mention "dual lamp". I like the cleaner looks of the W2Pc, so I wonder whether it could be an alteranative for the G2Pc.

the g2p has dual lamp also.
It has a 8 ms response time screen.
I would probably call the w2pc screen as better. Its probably not as bright but its the commonly used wuxga lg screen.
I dont even know what screen is used in the g2p its sort of unique its a 1440 x 900 17 inch screen.
The g2 also has a 512 mb version of the x1700 which is clocked higher thant he w2j -

oh im sorry i have only seen pictures of each.
Most people would say the w2j is among the strongest built laptop there is. Much better than the g2.
It also costs what, 600$ more. -
i hate to say this, and i know some of the members over here will start getting offended, but i would advise you to stay away from the w2 series, they seem to have some power related issues, mine has been to asus 5 times since September...
the laptop looks perfect, sturdy and everything you want, screen in magnificent but there is just some weird stuff going that will cause you huge headaches especially if you got it for something important like school-work in my case....
mine is a w2j, but i guess other than the video card and the processor it is exactly the same as the w2p ...
read my w2j hibernation post on this forum.......
i hope this helps, maybe it is just me being unlucky..... but the fact that other people report similar problems will make me think twice about buying this machine........ -

The W2 series in general is more of a multi-media notebook which offers a lot of features, which also contributes to the increased price when compared to the G2. Also the quality of the W2 is excellent, brushed aluminum and a nice sleek look, also is one of the lighest 17" notebooks on the market.
The G2 is a decent gaming laptop, the W2 can also game too, it has a lower price tag due to the fact it is plastic, which is not a bad thing, it also has some touches of aluminum on the palm rests.
Other than that, if if your looking into both of these laptops, you will want to consider what you want to do with it. How will you use it, what features do you require. You may also want to consider why did people pick the G1 over the V1JP, since this can somewhat show a relationship of price versus performance. -

The W2 in both forms (WSXGA+ and WUXGA) blow the pants off the G2, but the G2 is still certainly far from a bad system.... it's just not as great as the W2. Basically, they're really meant for different people at different price points, but the W2 not only has better build quality (and I would argue design as well), but as Danny said, it's one of the lightest 17".... and to that I would add it's also the thinnest. Just great overall and you can't go wrong with it as long as you can afford it.
The screen on both of the W2's are just as bright as the G2 and that really shouldn't be an issue. The WUXGA screen on the higher end W2 may be a pushing the limits of what most people would be comfortable with and also afford, but the new lower price on the WSXGA+ model makes it a really great model.... consider this:
G2 - price went up $100 with Vista refresh ($2000)
W2 wsxga+ - price went down $100 with Vista refresh ($2400)
W2 wuxga - price went up $100 with Vista refresh ($2900)
Makes the $2400 model a great buy. -
I personally feel that the W2 is one of the best looking series Asus has produced.. if not the best. Kinda wish their 15.4" and 14" models had a similar design.. kinda like how the V2 and V1 have similar styling.

The W1 was a great system and although it's about a four year old design, it's still beautiful.... Now, the W2's design basically improved on every little thing that could have been improved upon the W1... I really wish the W2 wasn't so close in price and size to the W1, because it would have been great to redo the W1 now based on what they're learned about the W2... but that's not going to happen. If it weren't for all the little feature upgrades that the V1 got, the W1 would have been refreshed into the US market without a doubt.... but little things like a webcam, fingerprint reader, and the like are almost required now.

I would be more a multimedia user than a gamer, so I think that the W2 would fit better my needs. I'm a bit scared about the reported hardware problems, it's difficult to tell how isolated or widespread those problems are. -

ALL of the current systems have a 30 day Zero Bright Dot LCD Policy... everyone one (except the lamborghini models which have a full year)...
I know the W2 is a better machine simply because it's built better and you could instantly tell if you had both in front of you... and becasue it's a lot lighter and a lot thinner......
