hi, pretty new to this site...and laptops in general so I was wondering if i could get the opinions of you guys on whether to get a G1S or a G2S.. or if you have a better suggestion (itll be a gaming/college laptop)

And weight isnt really a problem for me so ya... which do you guys think would be better?

edit: also some quick questions... should i go with 2, 3 or 4 gb RAM?
and .. should i go ahead and spend the extra money to get the 64bit (so it can actually use all 4gb)?
noticed on one site the option for internal turbo memory... what is that o_O and is it worth getting? o_O

Personally, I just bought a G1S because I did not want a huge 17" notebook and the G1S is just awesome.

I went with the G2S. Even though it's designated as a gaming laptop, I don't plan on using it for that purpose. I just wanted a large, comfortable, screen that could display a lot of stuff and run smoothly at the same time since I often listen to lectures online and all. The G2S is also red instead of green, and since I'm not a big fan of green... yeah, you get the idea. Either one performs well for college use as far as I know. I can't help with the gaming aspect of this thing though.

8600m GT looks 40% +- lower then 8600 GTS XXX (Desktop) on 3Dmark06
so i guess this is high enough to play all actual games on High def, isn´t it?

Wait for the F8 to come out.
To answer your other questions, don't get the 4 gigs of ram and Vista 64-bit. 64-bit is not all that great with compatibility yet. By turbo memory, do you mean Robson?

When do you go to College?

If you got time, then wait, you can get the G1S, it is a powerful laptop, you may want to wait for the V1 with Santa Rosa.

The G2S will be too big to carry to school, but for those who will primarily using it for home usage, the G2 is a great option.

Go with as much ram as you want, 2GB should be sufficient for Vista and Gaming needs, if you want to be slightly ahead of the curve, go with 3Gb, but other than that, stick with 2GB and then upgrade later to 4GB when prices drop.

f3sv is about 400$ less expensive and has a decent card in it. it scores less 1000points in 3dmark but the money saved can be used to buy a new notebook sooner for a poor college student :)

You might want to consider the upcoming C90s which is DTR or desktop replacement, it is more powerful then the G1s and uses a desktop chipset. Search the forums here to find more info. Plus since you'll be at college battery life aint a problem cause outlets everywhere you would be sitting anyways.

The C90, as a DTR, means desktop CPU and no power management for mobile.... so you'll want to sit next to power outlets in class.

Not at all. according to asus the conroe in the c90 can be throtled even better then those in any santa rosa. meaning the battery life of the c90 will be comparable to any santa rosa mobile platform

I have the G2 and I recommend it. I carry it everywhere in my backpack and it's not overly heavy to me. I like the big screen and that is why I mainly chose the G2...I didn't buy it for gaming that's what my uber fast desktop is for. For me though weight has never been an issue, but that's just my humble opinion. Get what you feel most comfortable with and appeals to your senses.

Thats really interesting. So the C90 should have similar battery life to the G1s, weighs the same, looks better, is cheaper, and has a much faster CPU?

Actually what G2P said has already been contradicted by Asus. Their official release from Computex was 81 minutes of battery life on power-saver mode and 14 minutes of battery life on turbo gear mode. Not as good as most santa rosa's. I will say that it may be possible to undervolt them a lot to save battery life, but I don't know.

Yep the C90 has a small battery and alot of power.

It the game world it would be known as a "glass cannon" it hits hard and fast but wont last long...

but thats why its considered a DTR because it needs to be plugged in for any extensive work. Well worth it tho for the cost and power you get, and I cant think of any notebook that will give you any kind of gaming ablity on the battery for long.

    Hi,
I'm curious as to your battery life. Do you have some numbers you can post? I go back and forth between the G1s and G2s. Have you been able to watch a DVD movie on one charge? How's the heat, screen, etc? Any general thoughts?

    TIA!

i can watch ALL of Schlinders List on the G2 easy at full screen brightness.
And the G2 is cool and the HD0 never gets above 60 according to SpeedFan 4.32

Wow! I like hearing things like that! Isn't that like 2.5-3 hours? Did you step down into a battery saving profile? Do you remember how much juice you had left on the battery?

I appreciate the inputs! I like the idea of a bigger screen in a still portable format. Do you have any comments on portability, etc? How's the bag?

as soon as you unplug the laptop it goes into battery saving mode automatically and dims the screen a tiny bit anyways.
And yes, Schlindlers is just under 3hrs and i plugged right back in after the movie as the battery icon was blinking.
