Hello. I have a G2S-1A that I've been using for the last 1 and a half year and recently the monitor won't even turn on. I've had artifact issues for a while now with red and blue lines popping up occasionally and going away.
-edit-
I've been reading. My screen remains black when I try to boot up, I hear the boom, but nothing else happens. This happened a few times yesterday and the day before but a few attempts of powering up fixed it. Now it seems I'm SOL.
I've talked to tech support and they've given me a RMA number. The thing is, they also mention that they will most likely just replace the motherboard.
I've read around and noticed that people who owns the G1S that had their motherboard replaced have gotten a newer version with the 9500m GT instead. I heard that it's slower due to the DRR2, has VRAM that it can't even physically use.
I live in the Markham area, and be going to the depot over at Cochrane.
Will my G2S-1A be getting the same motherboard?
If I am, is there anyway for me to argue for a better deal? I'm a gamer, I'm already experiencing less than stellar frame rates in games, I really don't like the idea of getting something 10% slower than something that I had originally paid for, especially due to defects out of my hands, since I don't even OC.
-edit-
Is it possible to exchange this laptop for a newer model by paying the difference? What choices do I have?
Thanks!

From my discussion with Asus US west coast support, "[they] do not have any upgrade options at this time." The G2S is the little brother of the G2SV and G2SG, with a 9550M and 8700M. In short, they will run cooler so no down clocking.Since they are initially cooler you have the ability to OC to make up the difference, at your own caution. The motherboards (or daughterboards) are not available from official resellers as they are locked by Asus. I know you can purchase the G2S motherboard online, but that still may not include the graphics module. What will probably happen is just what Asus has told you. They will replace it with another fun and chipper 8600M for your to enjoy for the rest of its (possibly limited) life. At this point, there isn't much happening for us G2S owners. If you are using stock Asus drivers, you may want to try Nvidia's 179 series. They retain many of the important functions but perform better and are cooler under load (with powermizer off). You may also want to undervolt your processor to reduce total heat. After your warranty runs out, you may want to consider applying new thermal paste and possible a bit of case modding for better installation. Best of luck!

From what I've experienced with my 8600M so far, it looks like it will be a short and limited life. So just to be sure, unlike the G1S, there will won't be any newer version of the motherboard installed on this laptop, just yet another new G2S motherboard?
Is the G1Sn's motherboard incompatible with the G2S? -
I do not know about the G1SN, but I would think that the G2SG and G2SV mobo's would be, seeing they are the same chassis.
-
Does the G2SG and G2SV mobo's GPU have a history of failing like the G1S or my G2S?
-
Not to my understanding. Each piece of hardware has its quirks and issues, but the issue is that the SV had a limited sales audience and the SG was fairly limited, but neither can be bought from Asus.
-
Is there a place I can read up on regarding their individual quirks and issue? I'm about to send my laptop in for repair and I really like to know what I'm getting into. Also if the situation is bad all round I'd like to push for an upgrade.

Look in owner's lounges and such around the Asus section. As long as you update your drivers, you should be ok.
