First off please post in this thread if you are a G2S-A1 or G1S owner and let me know if you have successfully installed the 8600m GT driver in XP SP2. Thanks.
I need some help. I have slipstreamed SP2 and the SATA drivers on to my XP disc and nothing else. I installed all the other G2S drivers just fine, but nvidias.
I get an error that says in the title bar "nvidia setup error" and something about it being unable to locate a suitable driver. However I have used the VGA driver that was posted here awhile back for the G2S-A1 and XP. I also found that it lacked an INF file with reference to the 8600m GT... so it would seem this poster must not have tested it.
Second I downloaded new drivers and modded INF files from www.laptopvideo2go.com and I still got the same error.
Lastly I think it is SP2, because it has a VgaSave service that runs when it finds no driver for the gfx card, however it looks like it may also be creating a resource conflict.
Tomorrow I am going to try and install XP SP1 with the SATA drivers and it does not have the same VgaSave service, so maybe it will work better. Then maybe I will risk SP2.

Also I have completely removed Vista and I refuse to go back to it. I will run any other OS and emulate XP if I have to, but I will not go back to Vista period.

I had the same problem with G1S-A1, with XP MCE. I went back to Vista temporarily until I can find a solution. Let me know how the SP1 install goes.

1. It is impossible to use SATA drivers without SP1 it seems
2. SP1 has a vgaservice just like SP2, they both have high resolutions
3. nVidia's drivers still don't work in SP1 either
.....I am beginning to think it is going to be easier to get OSX running on my laptop than XP.. for the first time Apple may just beat MS at hardware compatiability in this instance. Of course on the whole they don't but it is still amazing for them.. -
Finally I found ONE person who has actually solved this problem over in the Asus forum...
The solution to this problem is simple... take out the dang memory. 4gb is too much for XP!!

**UPDATE** Here is a better solution
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20071109004343171&board_id=3&model=G2S&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
And you do not have to take out any memory
------------------------------------------------------------------
To update a bit more on this, you can have 2.5gb installed...
After taking out ALL of the screws to get to the internal ram I realized I only needed to remove one screw to get to the internal ram slot.
The keyboard is held in by 3 clips near the top of the keyboard inset.
Once you pop out the keyboard you can leave the cable attached or remove it if you want and remove the one screw on the metal plate and take out the 1gb stick.
I replaced the 1gb stick with my 2gb and then booted up to make sure it all worked ok. It did so I think inserted another 512mb on the bottom side and still worked ok. Lastly I even tried the 1gb in the bottom slot to see if it made a difference, sadly it once agains screws up the video.
I will sacrifice 512mb of ram (basically dropping from 3gb to 2.5gb) any day to get rid of Vista. However once I get OSX running I would like every ounce of ram I can get. At least it is easy enough to put more in the bottom and I can specify how much memory to allot to XP.
P.S. I forgot the G2S-A1 has 2 1gb sticks and I had taken the one I had to take out of the bottom and placed it in my macmini awhile back...
G2S-A1 8600m GT drivers do not work in XP!?
