pretty similar to G1s-a1
-
-
so the only difference is the screen size?
Also any idea why ASUS never tried to make this a top notch system, i mean a 17" could hold much more. -
i have to say though, it does look vicious
-
The colours don't match though, but that was last generation of the G-Series
-
OMG according to http://service.futuremark.com/orb/resultanalyzer.jsp?projectType=14&XLID=0&UID=9509067
a computer got 24419 in 3dmark06 -
Thats one huge Mofo laptop >.>
-
is it WIDESCREEN?
yeah, this notebook is close to a DTR already. -
incase anyone is wondering, behind this oval plate is 2 ports... the AV-in (sep option cable needed) and the co-axle in (another sep cable needed) Why it would have co-axle in without being able to buy the internal tv tuner is beyond me -

So GenTech wich do you like better personally? the G2S or the G1S??
I think I may want the 17" more due to the much higher native resolution. (plan to do alot of movie watching on the machine, more than gaming probably)
I wish they did it all black like the G1S I dont like the silver, also they did away with the textured touch pad looks like wich looked pretty neat in pictures on the G1S.
Im guessing any lower resolution is streching to fit the screen and that you have no scaling options (1:1 Pixel Mapping, aspect strech) -
Gentech PC, thanks for the pics and 3dmark, as for the games could you post the fps they get as well, Id like to see how much better or worse this is then the Asus G1S.
Thanks -
I don't think it can be better than the G1S when it's the same specs and higher resolution. If anything it can only be worse. IMO they should have gave the 8600GT 512MB version to the G2S. Now that would have been more appealing.

AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
They should have just called this computer the G1S-A2
-
haha! nice joke!
G1s and G2s are two different notebooks(by screen size),how coulld you name it A2?
usually, the front name represents the overall of a system.if it wasn't,asus would just replace G1s name to G3,correct? -
Wait which is better, i have been hearing all sorts of things
8600M GT 256 MB DDR3
OR
8600M GT 512 MB DDR2
Also is there even a 8600M GT 512 MB DDR3?? -
One thing I like about G2S (or G2P) is that the keyboard, the G2 keyboard feel is the closest to the desktop KB I've ever seen on a notebook. -

Ahh well as a first time notebook buyer that may work to my advantage Gentech. I have been playing around with some display models at bestbuy of other notebooks and a few friends at work, and I dont like the keyboard at all on your average laptop. Granted im sure id get used to any keyboard after I have owned it for awhile, the idea of a desktop type keyboard is very appealing to me.
I understand the mobility concerns of a 17" notebook, also I understand the performance concerns with a higher res screen tying to play a game.
Again both dont really effect me personally. Id only use this thing at work, and maybe at home sometime, thats a 30 second walk from my car to my desk. I will be playing alot of movies so I like the idea of full 1080 support (im a HD junky) and for games, Id just play a lower res than the screens native and let it scale up.
So no flaws in the G2S for me except I dont like the looks as much :/
Oh another question, besides the screen resolution, is it a diffrent screen type?
the G1S is listed as "gloss" and the G2S is listed as "glare" does that mean its not a glossy screen?? (thats a good thing for me, I dont like the glare from gloss screens so thats a big +1 for the G2S for me if its true)
So I think the G2S wins me over vs the G1S. I'll have to do one more trip to best buy and do a close look at all the 15 and 17" notebooks they have out and see just how big the diffrence is in size and if I prefer one size to the other (I guess its worth saying i use a 37" HD LCD for my desktop so I like big screens)
Now I just need to sit tight till you get a review of the C90 up for us and I'll know wich to buy from you.
edit: also a request if possible. A picture or two of the G1S and G2S side by side with like a 3/4 overhead view from the front with the notebooks open. As to see the screen size, base size, keyboard, and overall look and be able to easily see the diffrences. -
other than physical size difference between the G1 and G2 the G2 has a superior screen (IMO)
My influence to look at the G2 was because a friend had a G1. Ive had both the G1 and G2 side by side and the G2 has better color and dynamic range... just marginal thou -

The GGDR3 reaches higher speeds and generates less heat. And is based off DDR2 has not relations with DDR3. -
8600M GT 256 MB GGDR3
or
8600M GT 512 MB GGDR2 -
edit: btw i like the design of the G2S better, the silver outside is really cool. -

I think there has been some misinformation floating around the net about a GDDR2 version of the 8600GT, as far as I know there is only a GDDR3 version. So probably a bad spec released somewhere or a typo that got out of hand.
-
Yes, I wanted to be a know-it all too(no I didn't take a shot at mujtaba, i just get annoyed when people say GDDR2)
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
There is a 512MB DDR2 version of the 8600M GT. It has been documented. I believe it was only a prototype model though, it was put into a preproduction Zepto to approximate performance and thermal envelopes. I don't believe it will ever be available on the market as it is definitely not as good as GDDR3, 256, 512 or otherwise.

GenTechPC (Ken),
How about a few large size pics of the LCD in action. Doesn't have to be a game, a desk top with a picture or something would be much appreciated
I want to see how the resolution looks, and the brightness too -
-
Thank You...
That is some serious real estate... and judging by the washed out top pick it is very bright (I know its hard to capture bright lit screens) Please post more pics at your leisure and thanks again -
-
Thanks for trying though. I am looking through some stuff on google as to why this happens here is what I have come up with
Also could you tell me if it is the demo you are running or the actual game
Try running it,
-in xp compatible mode
-install this, it will update both dx 10 and dx 9 files http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=D2E2CAE1-6AEF-4A40-BD00-F0FB2A71E99F&displaylang=en
From http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_3.html
Windows Vista Users: If you're having problems running this game under Windows Vista, first make sure that you're using the latest Vista graphics and audio drivers for your hardware, and the latest version of this game (see page 4 for patch details). Next, make sure you don't change your UAC settings after the game has been installed, as due to Virtualization this can change the location of the game files and settings. If you can't launch the game successfully when UAC is enabled, you will need to run the game with full Admin privileges. To do this either right-click on the launch icon and select 'Run as Administrator', or right-click on the launch icon, select Properties and under the Compatibility tab tick 'Run this program as an administrator' then click OK. I strongly recommend that you refer to the TweakGuides Tweaking Companion for Windows Vista for more information - in particular check the 'Gaming in Vista' section of the Graphics & Interface chapter; the UAC section of the PC Security chapter; and the 'Personal Folders' and 'Directory Junctions & Symbolic Links' sections of the Windows Explorer chapter. These will tell you how you can fix game-related issues and also explain the relevant differences of Vista. -
I tried BF2 Demo, BF2 full version with patch, BF2 2142 Demo, non of them works, but I'll try your tweak guide tomorrow and will let you know, thanks again. -
No worries, if it still seizes to work then don't stress it, just leave it alone -

Tips for taking photos of a monitor:
1.) Dont use a flash
2.) Dont be next to it, get 5+ ft away and use zoom with a tripod or sit the camera down and use a timer.
3.) Use the lowest iso setting possible
I dont have a fancy super expensive professional camera, but I have a higher end "point n' shoot" (fujifilm finepix f30) here is how my pictures came out using the above technique for my computer monitor:
http://widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10105
I'll do a similar review of the screen for wich ever notebook I decide to get. -
^_^ dont have big different with My G1s A1
Only This LCD more big and the red color lamp look more nice ^_^ -
Problem solved thanks to your link.
The G2S's LCD shows 62hertz at all modes and there is no way I can change that, so I had to go to:
Documents>Battlefield2>Profiles>Default and edit "Video.con" to force to run at 62herts:
THANK YOU SO MUCH. -

My pleausre Ken.
As for the BF2, BF2142 issue. I wouldnt have figured that one out. The Asus panels run at 62hz??? strange.
EA' has BF2142 and BF2 setup to run 60hz... I am supprised you can overide it and still play online. I thought that it was part of there lame "we hate cheating" slogan
They dont allow use of widescreen because they say it gives an unfair advantage to widescreen users. Even tho mainstream games like counter stike and UT2004 have no probems with it. Given maye 80% or more of monitor sales are widescreen now I think its a very poor move on there part.
You can force widescreen resolutions as I have done (I run 1920x1080) but you do nothing but cut the top and bottom of your screen off and thus actually put yourself at a small disadvantage vs sombody with a traditional 5:4 monitor. Piss on them I say, unfair??? I still get top 3 every game even with the top and bottom of my screen cut off -
Yes I can modify the BF2 and BF2142's video file and it's now working fine.
Now my only problem is I try to access console menu by pressing "~" but nothing happens, any thoughts? -
Picking up the GDDR3 vs DDR3 thread...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GDDR3
"... GDDR3 is unrelated to the upcoming JEDEC DDR3 specification. This memory uses internal terminators, enabling it to better handle certain graphics demands. To improve bandwidth, GDDR3 memory transfers 4 bits of data per pin in 2 clock cycles.
Despite being designed by ATI, the first card to use the technology was nVidia's GeForce FX 5700 Ultra, where it replaced the DDR2 modules used up to that time. ..." -
-
Doesnt the 62 HZ refresh rate hurt your eyes??, i thought having it at 85 was the best.
As for your bf2 console thing, il have a look
EDIT: are you pressing the ~ key like shift + key above TAB, or just the key above TAB. you should be just pressing the key above TAB -
-
Hmm, only thing i can think of is by default somewhere in the config files, maybe the profile one the game has automatically set this command
renderer.drawConsole 0
when set to 0 it disables the access to the in game console, try searching for renderer.drawConsole and if you find it change its value to 1 which will enable the in game console.
As for the refresh rate at 62 hz, doesnt that hurt your eyes, like doesnt the screen flicker
EDIT: lol, BF2 console is only available when you are connected to a server, so make sure your in a server then press the console button -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Your thinking of a CRT blackbird, where the lines are drawn across the screen at the refresh rate. A low refresh means you can see a "flicker" somtimes. (even if you cant see it, some people are sensitive to it and get headaches and stuff)
LCD's tho dont work that way, all the pixels update independantly so there are no lines to give you a headache 60hz is normal. 62 is ..odd.
You wont find a LCD with 85hz refresh -
Aslo GentechPC, did my previous post, post # 47, solve your console problem -
Anyway, the G2S at 1600X1200 max video settings looks at 60FPS with my own eyes...
