I think I am having a heat issue with my G2S with the 8600M GT. I usually just play WoW with it and have noticed for quite awhile that after running for a bit the game will periodically slow down. I just downloaded HWMonitor and my GPU is at 75C at idle and goes up to about 96C while playing.

I think the slowdown in game is due to the heat. If i Alt-tab out for a few seconds the temp will go down and when I go back to the game it runs fine for a little bit.

What kind of temps do other G2S users see? I have cleaned out any dust and only use the laptop on a solid surface.

If your notebook is still under warranty, I'd suggest sending it in for a RMA. Most of the 8600M GT graphics cards are known to be faulty and overheats. If you've already cleaned your fan and heatsink, it's most likely the GPU that's at fault.

hey, if i accidentally took off the warranty sticker to move the heatsink to blow off possible dust trapped there, would that count as voiding my warranty? my temps are decent, idling at 60/66 for CPU/GPU, but in case i need to RMA my g1s would i be out of luck?

Yes, removing the sticker will officially void your warranty. However, if you explain to the tech rep that you've removed it to simply clean the dust/dirt from the fan and heatsink, Asus will sometimes honor your warranty given that the CPU has not been replaced.

What if the CPU was replaced by the retailer? I bought mine from gentech and they upgraded the CPU, do I still have a warranty?

The warranty will still cover since the problem is not the CPU it's the GPU, send me PM with your information and I'll help you setup RMA.

Also try use compressed air to blow out the dust since your G2S might be 2 years old.

RMA is in order. dont be like me and try to fiddle with 2000 different drivers and 10 cans of compressed air. save yourself the trouble and send it in :D

The danger with sending it dusty is that they'll assume that it was the dust that was causing the problem, clean it, maybe change thermal paste etc and return the same GPU.

Which then may die in a couple of months. So that's not a good outcome.

they'll still send back with only changing the thermal paste the first time around anyway

i think it takes 2-3 times till they replace the motherboard/GPU.

on a side note, is there even a 9500m option for the g2s?

Yes, it will. I would suggest using a can of compressed air and clean the fan and heatsink as best you can before sending it in for an RMA. There's no guarantee that Asus will honor your warranty once you've tampered with the sticker.

Alright i'm getting ready to send it in. I took screenshots of all the tabs on CPU-Z and GPU-Z so I will know if anything gets replaced without me knowing and emailed them to myself. I also took a screenshot of HW Monitor of the idle and load temperatures and made it so they will know exactly what I am getting at :)

Print it out and send it in with your laptop in case their repair guy just boot to Windows and think everything is working fine.

    agreed

they need to know that you're aware of the never ending 8600m problem in G1s'. dont stop harassing them until they replace the motherboard with one with the 9500m. probably the 2nd or 3rd time you send it in

Got my G2S back today. They replaced the motherboard and the optical drive. So far both are working great and my temps are about 10C cooler at both idle and load.

I'm pretty impressed with their service. It came back to me very well packed and was extremely clean and looked like it was almost brand new. They also tightened the screen hinge which was nice.

Sorry to necropost, but I just thought I'd share my situation. I have the exact same model and have always been diligent with ye ol' can of compressed air. (Costco bulk packs.) Yet I was running into the same extreme heat issues on the gpu. Cooking at over 100c under load! Worrisome to say the least.

Since my warranty had expired, I attempted to find the problem myself. I found that in the fan case, between the blades and the heat sink fins a thin layer of dust had built up to a near felt like consistency. Removing that dropped my heat under load by over 20c.

Since I'd mostly used the compressed air on the side edges and not the bottom intake it pushed all the dust in the one direction, and if not entirely clearing the case, the fan would then push it back. (Basically sandwiching it.)

Anyone outside of the warranty period might want to consider the same.
