Or at least I think that's the issue. I can't play Half-Life 2 for more than 30 min without the game stuttering and slowing down. GPU core temp is 81C which is pretty hot. Normal idle speed is about 65C. Cold boot 61C.

Is this a common problem of gaming laptops? Is there anything I can do to help it run cooler?

Room is well ventilated and it's the middle of winter.

Currently running Vista, but I've been debating installing XP. I'm kind of at a loss as to what I should do. Pretty lame to spend 2k on a laptop and not have it able to even play a game 2-3 years old.

Thanks in advance for any help.

wow...CPU temp 65c idle?!?!!? thats high! Maybe there is a problem with the contact of the thermal paste...? hmm Have you checked whether there are apps running in the back ground?

    GPU (core temperature), not CPU.

And this is going by RivaTuner. Never had a laptop before so I don't know what the heat range is for them, but it all seems a bit high.

oh ok, thats fine for GPU but what is your CPU temp?

Those temps are not so high considering what the G1S and C90 are getting... I would try other video drivers as well. Perhaps modded ones from laptopvideo2go (I assume the G2S GPU is an NVIDIA).

Ya, 8600m GT. I'll try that out thanks. This is my first laptop so it seems abnormally high for someone used to desktop temps.

Managed to play Half Life 2 for a good hour later today. No idea what was causing the slow down but I'll check the CPU temp as well.

    Thanks guys.

The slowdown is probably caused by the GPU throttling down due to heat. But 85 degrees is a bit low to throttle down nowaday's laptop GPUs, so that's why I suggested other drivers -- they might be more relaxed in their temp thresholds.

To make it explicit, laptop temps are usually higher than desktops, there's so much less room to create airflow and dissipate heat...

I have similar GPU temps at idle, even after standard use for 2 hours, my cpu's are 45c after an hour of 100% power which is also not too bad. The Asus G2S-B1 will run hotter than others as its a gaming platform.

On a sidenote what is the difference between the B1 and the B2? I remember that their was a version above the B1 with like BlueRay, but that was like 3k 3 months ago...
