Can anyone of you hear a "ticking" sound when the harddive is busy?

I thought it was normal until I asked someone else a couple days ago and he says his harddrive is the most silent he ever saw...

I hear this from day 1...

    do you?

In case you want more info:

Is it a constant tick, or just alot of ticking? When the hdd is access data the magnetically controlled head/arm assembly makes noise and under load it makes alot of noise.

A constant CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK however is another story.

No its not constant, it clicks when its reading / writing something.

In other words it ticks when the "busy" light indicator near the keyboard is lid.

I'ts been like that since the first day, not that it is suddenly making this noise etc...

I checked with official tools from seagate and my HD passed all the tests.

    I just read this:
    http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_hard_drive_clicking

seems like i am too having less ticking sounds when the drive is busy.

I tried copying gta iv from D to C and from C to D and in both cases the ticking almost stopped.

when i stopped it was back when the HD had very low activity.
when its not avtive AT ALL it does not tick, when its very active it does not tick, when its doing simple things like opening a word document or media player, it ticks each time the blue lid is on.

    weird eh?

    another update
does anyone know what harddrive of the two, in g50, is asus express gate installed on?
I started Windows in safe mode, no activity at all, still ticking.

I started asus expressgate from which i am eidting this post now, no ticking at all.
could this be because the HD where windows is on is inactive?

There is some crazy ticking that happens during very disk-intensive processes, specifically copying giant files over. Letting it defrag or just do its idle process stuff usually solves it.

I had one day a long time ago when the HDD was ticking much louder than normal, and it went away again and never came back. Haven't had any problems with the disk. Dunno.

I hardly hear ticking on the HDD, but sometimes a few months ago, all would freeze and the HDD would made a loud click chirping. it would last a while and I thought the unit went bad...

but then it stopped and I haven't had problems since.

Hard drive noise is normal, i should break out some old 64 mb drives let you listen to them and most of you will never think about the noise again. Though there maybe one person experiencing something else... like failure but doesnt sound like it so far.

I wouldnt have screwed with anything btw, that software might actually lower hdd performance in favor of power and noise reduction, same as they do with cdrom drives.

the ticking noises were probably the load cycles (when the head is loaded/unloaded). see if the count goes up (in hdparm) every time you hear the tick.
