I just got my G50 yesterday. After updating the BIOS to 213, and enabling VT-x in the BIOS setup, I installed VMware 6.5. Help>About shows that I am indeed running a 64-bit OS. I create a PC (Ubuntu 9.04), and mount the ISO. When I load the virtual machine, I get a message stating that my system is unable to run 64-bit guest PCs, and that I do NOT have VT-x enabled. I installed two different versions of VMware, with the same results. I downloaded Sun VirtualBox 2.2.2. The system information shows that VT-x is enabled on my PC, and it is 64-bit capable. I attempt to run a Ubuntu 64-bit virtual machine, receiving the error message "This kernel requires a x86-64 CPU. but only detected a i686 CPU..."

    Any ideas?

What operating system do you have installed? In order to use a 64bit guest OS, you have to have a 64bit host OS.

I dont use vmware often as I use virtual box. But in VB's case you must be running the 64 bit version of the software to have a 64 bit guest that is of course in addition to the os being 64 bit.

Interesting problem and I have yet to try it out as I havent needed a vm right now.

I dont think you mentioned what g50 you have.

It's a G50-X5. I guess there is a limitation in the processor, meaning it does not have hardware virtualization capabilities. It doesn't fully add up to me, because after turning on VT-D, it should work. Maybe its a BIOS bug?

VMware never required virtualization last i remember itsbeen optional on all virtual machine software as many processors dont support it.

VMware virtual pc and virtual box should all run just off the os/cpu along without virtualization. If the 32 bit version is working and the 64 bit isnt then there is a different problem arising. I havent tried either as ive used up all my emails for vmware trials but i think i remember someone having issues with 64 bit virtual box so ill give it a shot later.

One thought is if it does use any 64 bit device drivers on the host end that could be an issue on 64 bit if they werent signed but we are talking about vmware here shouldnt be a problem with them.

Was it the X5 from best buy? Those CPU's don't support virtualization, and Virtualization is required to virtualize a 64-bit OS.

Bah i just read the user manual on virtual box and 64 bit guests do need virtualization.... i wonder why that came about as all a VM does is pass the cpu instructions off to the cpu and emulates the rest.

Oh well im getting ready to change the processor in this for a T9600 as soon as the thermal paste and cooler get here.

Man I need to get a new CPU too. The T5800 in my N50 isn't cutting it...

They need virtualization if you are wanting to run a 64 bit OS...
