EDIT** sorry about title, should have been G50V-A1

I have had the g50 for about 6-7 months i think and everything was working smooth until a couple weeks ago. Sometimes my screen just starts flashing while playing a game, when that happens in a matter of seconds i have to just manually turn the laptop off because the screen looks like its going to rip and it does not look nice at all. I have no time to exit and shutdown due to the fact that i cant see anything but all the images and colors mashing together with gray lines. I have to turn it on after waiting about 3-5 minutes otherwise when i boot it back up i can see partial lines moving on the loading screen where it shows the ASUS' burning logo with intel on the bottom right hand corner.

I have been suggested i should get a cooling rack for my laptop, but i don't know if it is an overheating problem, i am thinking something is seriously wrong with the vid card or possibly the hard drive.

Anyone have any suggestions? thanks in advance to anyone who throws their two cents out there.
    :(

Any idea of what your peak temps are? You can use HWMonitor or Everest to check them.

As Delta suggested, check your GPU temps to see if it is overheating. Also try connecting your notebook to an external monitor to see if you can replicate the issue. From the sound of it, it seems like a faulty/unstable GPU, but just for kicks, I'd also try testing with another graphics driver.

so thanks you two for the reply on short notice.

@david, i ran the HWMonitor and checked my temperatures and here is how it went:

    ACPI: 75 degree celsius
CPU: Core #0: 81 degree celsius
    Core #1: 81 degree celsius
GPU: (so with the GPU temps i was running two windows of World of Warcraft/Browsers/MSN/media player for music)
    temp: 91 degree celsius

then after i close the two WoW windows, and checked 5 minutes later and it was 69 degree celsius, so yes i think running two windows of wow isnt capable for the laptop maybe it is if i get a cooler?

anything you guys can suggest? and is this the real reason i have been seeing the lines and color distortions with the computer dying out instantly?

any good coolers/programs anything at all i can use-- feel free to post and help out. thanks.

Id recommend browsing the internet for a fan control app. The things your explaining sounds EXACTLY like a bad gpu in some sense. I know if I overclock a gpu too much those things happen. And with those temp's, Im not surprised. While gaming the 9800m gs in my g50vt-x5 never goes above 63 in the most intense moments, so at 90* c Im surprised something hasn't broken. Even the temps of the rest of my hardware hover around 55 and never peak past 58. And the reason you have to wait a few minutes to start it up, otherwise you still see the lines is because in this kind of hardware, with this amount of transistors, were talking about at least 500 million, so it takes time for the power to drain out, and if its not drained out, the card can still retain some of the stuff in it.

Yes, those temps are way too high. I only hit about 79 for my GPU and I have a 9800GS. Maybe try cleaning out the vents and the fan if you use it in a dusty environment. Dust killed the video card and damaged the mobo on my Inspiron years ago...the display started acting funny before it went down. I'd limit your gaming until you can bring the temps down, because a new video card would be terribly expensive.

Use a can of compressed air, and make sure to get ALL of the dust. Don't just blow for a second or two, make sure to get all the corners and such. And make sure to look away!

unless you have this on 24/7 it is too early for cleaning. the fan does not need cleaning the radiator does. the fan can be covered in feces and still do its job as long as the radiator is not blocked by lint. if you find that cleaning the radiator did not fix the issue call asus and arange rma. they know how to get it done

Max temp I got with the 9800m is 86 C playing L4D at 1080p full settings on my 24" monitor so yeah 91 is a problem.
