I had a thread like this for the C90S and it came in very handy a collection of all the common problems and how to fix them in a Q&A format.

I already discovered a potential issue that I do not want anybody else go thru with the sound so I will start the thread with that.

Q: I have no sound at all in windows why?
A: In the bios if you turned off the start sound for the asus logo, for what ever reason this also kills the sound in windows. All your drivers will show working but at the hardware level the sound will be killed even tho in the device manager shows its enabled and working.

Q: When windows stats I get an error regarding aspg.exe could not start.
A: That is the Asus Copy Protect software, it works at first and then breaks later due to a windows update. The exact update is not known to me, so uninstalling the copy protect software will fix this if you do not plan to use it. If you do indeed use it you would have to download updates one at a time untill you find the one that breaks the program.

Q: The blue led for express gate stays on when my notebook is turned off.
A: Well there is no fix since this is not a problem, its designed this way so that express gate can be launched from the unit being off, if it really bugged you, you could remove the battery I suppose.

Q: Express gate stoped working for me!
A: If you did any sort of Raid setup, express gate is not supposed to function in Raid according to the manual, if you just wiped it out with a clean install you need to install it again off your drivers disk or download it from Asus's global page.

Q: I have a strange reverb in my headphones when using a usb device at the same time.
A: While the cause is not exactly known, if you go into your Realtech audio control panel and mute the microphone playback it may fix the problem (credit to JasperA66)

Q: After updating my bios my 2nd hard drive is not detected!
A: There is a bug in the bios that is being resolved that tricks the computer into recovery mode and it only see's one hard drive in this state. The known fix right now is to use your restore disk. I also think in most cases you may just need to enter the bios (F2 at startup) and make sure you change any settings back to where they were before (HDD Settings for RAID are especially important) and then hit F10 to save. This should be your first step after any bios changes, enter bios and save & exit even if changes do not need to be made to update the new bios.

Q: I have keyboard lag or missing keystrokes
A: Its a known issue, Asus is supposed to be working on a fix. As of now I do belive the beta bios has fixed this issue for me HERE.

A: Also check this thread as there have been other possible fixes posted HERE.

Q: Some key combination like S+D+Space do not work!
A: Another known issue the above combo is the main one that anybody has ever seen that does not work, Asus is supposed to be working on a new bios to fix this, for now the beta bios able to allow use of these combo's but the fix is not perfect because it will also press additional keys like the "Z" key, so if in a game just make sure not to have the additional key binded to something and you will be ok.

Does this mean that the start up sound has to be on then? No way of working around this?

Thats what it looks like to me, however it looks like that the volume setting in bios does not effect windows volume only the startup sound volume, so you can probably drop the sound setting to 0 and it will be silent and you will still have sound. I will test some point later.

Is that the same volume you changed before? If so, I'm guessing you can't turn the volume up then huh?

I did turn it up to the max of 9 (not 6) and it didnt get louder in windows only the start sound did so that to me means that turning it to 0 or 1 will make the start sound silent. Also you can always bypass that start screen totally in favor of a normal post screen with an option in the bios.

I have a strange problem, in some FPS games I cannot look all the way down or all the way up, it just stops as if the game prevents you from looking directly up or down. So far this only happens in Crysis and Rainbow Six: Vegas, I haven't noticed it in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. though... Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

Vicious I would appreciate if you paid close attention to this one.

For whatever reason I get squeeky static in headphones. (tested with three different pairs)

This squeeky static becomes louder as you plug a USB mouse into the 2 USB ports closer to the Audio input jacks and move the mouse around. Tested with two different mouses too. Note that the sound card must be processing a sound or have processed a sound. If there was no sound processing for more than 4 seconds, this static dissapears and then returns when some sound is processed again..

I beleive this is somekind of grounding problem? Maybe something is not grounded properly on the board??? Also when riva tuner was building its database there also was heavier squeeky static in the headphones, it also happens when the system (cpu/board/hdd) performs heavy/fast tasks. BTW I am working this at 220 volts since I am currently in europe. But yeah this squeeky static is very annoying!

    Running XP

Hmm you have a adapter for the different voltage right? If anything did you try using the battery only to see if its happening.

I do not think this is the first case of this happening in a Asus notebook, or even on other brands. I think its something to do with the voltage or perhaps the grounding.

My first thing to say is maybe the impedance is too high on the headphones but if you tried 3 pairs, unless they are all high end headphones that generally need an amp to run well that is probably not the case.

I honestly do not think there is a fix for an issue like this unless you just have a bad unit and need to RMA for a new one that works.

You can "work around" the problem tho by making use of bluetooth headphones or a bluetooth mouse.

The only headphones I have are some cheapo earbuds that were in lost and found for 3 months here so I grabbed them, the voltage/amp pull on those is so low I do not notice any problems, I use a G7 Mouse with my G50.

And of course my good headphones I use are my Pulsar 590's and those are bluetooth.

At home I have my Audio Technica A700's and can see if that causes the issue, again tho even tho high end headphones they have a pretty low impedance (I made sure of that before I got them)

Do you also have XP installed?

I checked on battery only, and the problem still exists.

Basically you need to put the headphones all the way up. Or at least close to all the way up. Unless this is a driver issue, maybe someone can find the pin which needs to be grounded or some solution? If nobody can reproduce this problem on XP then I will go ahead and disassemble the latptop.. maybe something popped out during the flight.

And the next problem now, also on XP, when using PLL set to overclock, sometimes ethernet stops working as soon as you press SET FSB. Then after replugging the ethernet cable, system detects some kind of SM BUS and ethernet starts working again. Now with bios 205 replugging the ethernet cable doesn't help.

The overclock is messing up your PCI buss and can/will cause devices on that buss to malfunction or fail. Thats a major downside to software level overclocking usually.

In desktops you can use the bios to overclock only the system fsb and the pci buss will stay locked.

See if clockgen works better for you. It will show the pci buss speed too.

Hey, has anyone else noticed the VGA output for the G50V being rather blurry at an output res of 1680*1050?

Anyone got a solution? Ntune does NOT work.

I have the sound problem also. Even when no UsB devices are plugged in I can hear a hiss noise which continues for a few seconds after a sound is played. I have tried a couple of different headphones and its the same. No issue with sound through the speakers though.

oh actually I worked out how to fix the sound issue. You just need to go to the Realtek Audio Control Panel, then to the microphone tab and then mute the playback volume.

great news, must have been some kind of reverb.

I had a very odd situation similar on my desktop where my mic was constantly picking up sound and I had to mute it for my mic to work right in team fortress 2 with my xfi card.

I think this is a very good idea. XS had a "Problems and Fixes" thread that I read a lot (and occasionally still do) for my P5W Dh Deluxe motherboard on my desktop system. I hope you can keep the main thread updated with the latest fixes, though, because reading through all the messages that will soon be posted here is going to be a hassle.

Anyways, here's just some more information you might consider adding:
    - Problem: I can barely hear my sound on my G50V.
---- Fix: The G50V's sound is automatically set to "4" in the BIOS by default. Increase this value to "8" to increase the maximum volume. This increased the sound volume on my system.

    - Problem: Keyboard and touchpad lag/issues
---- Fix: ASUS has confirmed that they're are some issues with the keyboard and touchpad and confirmed that a new BIOS is in the makes to fix the lag and touchpad issues. Currently, there is a BETA BIOS going around that you can test if you would like a fix right now. You can find this beta BIOS from certain users on this forum.

    - Problem: A light stays on above my keyboard even when I shutdown the computer completely. I think it is eating my battery life.
---- Fix: This light is for the built-in "Express Gate" feature on this laptop. There is currently no way of disabling this light or feature. The battery draw from this light should be very minimally, however. If you are losing battery life, you may want to make sure your system is shutting down and not entering a "Sleep State." On most Vista systems, the default action when hitting the power button on the laptop is to enter a "Sleep" state, which is a very conservative power state. However, it still uses a minimal amount of power. Please consult Vista documentation on how to change this.

    - Problem: I need more battery life!
---- Fix: They're are a vast majority of tweaks you can use to improve your battery life. To name a few, you can decrease the brightest of the display, you can also undervolt the laptop, and you can underclock the video card. They're are several tutorials on this forum that lists how to get the most out of your battery. However, if you still need more life even after performing all of these tweaks, the G50V can be upgraded to an M50 9-cell battery. The part number for this is: 90-NED1B2100Y

Yeah raising the sound volume in bios only increases the boot sound volume, not anything in windows, so may as well make it 0 to make boot silent.

I will add some new fixes to this thread tho.

hmm, the speakers aren't very good, imo.

You can try and download Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) and installing Media Player Classic (MPC).

Whenever you play a video/audio for the first time, go into MPC, go to "Play" in the menubar, scroll down to Filters, and then click on ffdshow Audio Decoder.

You can play with the equalizer, volume, and you can turn on "Dolby Surround Sound" or the "ProLogic" in the 'Mixer' option on the left and then enable the 'Dolby Decoder' (probably have to turn volume down after this). It's loud, but very distorted, imo, but you can hear it. You might can play with the equalizer to make it better. I spent a little time on it and it sounds pretty decent (and loud).

Seems like jaspers sound hissing problem was a software one. My mic playback volume was muted in the realtek panel all along. So nothing fixed here.

I plugged my mouse in right next to the headset and I get a high pitched tone. Not too bad at all but noticeable.

I moved it to the rear and no problems. Strange

I'm having a lot of problems with Shutdown and Sleep with my G50v. It fails to shut down properly 50% of the time, and fails to go to sleep 20% of the time. It's extremely annoying.

When I try to make it sleep and it fails, the screen goes blank but the computer keeps running.

When I try to shutdown and it fails, the windows shutdown screen just stays forever, but never shuts down.

    Any ideas?

    Some suggestions for the OP,

add the CPU stuck at 100% problem, and the USB controller disable fix, with the caveat that we don't know what it actually disables: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=292076&page=12

Mention that you need to press Fn+G to activate the key combinations that weren't working originally, with the beta BIOS. Also mention the glitches that people have been mentioning (such as some random key events being generated).

Mention the lag problems and the work done on fixing them by either disabling the touchpad from BIOS, or lowering the Synaptics processes priority: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=283541&page=4

Also see the index in the Owner's Lounge: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=279387 for details.

    More problems I have:

    1) Waking up from sleep mode, about 50% of the time it won`t activate the Ethernet port or my USB mouse. the only solution to get either working is a reboot
    2) The keyboard randomly quits working, such as right now. For example, when I try to type the AT symbol, I get this: "

Or when I type an apostrophe, it looks slightly wrong: Test`ing

Or a forward slash, I get this: é

Annoying issues I have with this notebook.

About the keyboard problem: you seem to be inadvertently switching the input language. Open the language bar and try disabling the keyboard combination for switching input languages.

Hey all. I've been playing Bioshock on My G50v for the past few evenings and having a great time. It runs extremely smooth and fast (too fast is a common complaint with the Pc version). Last night I thought I'd try o/clocking the CPU thorugh Direct Console. When I ran Bioshock, I found that it pause every couple of minutes for a split second. Is this the issue people have identified as being caused by the touchpad? It's weird that it only happens when o/clocking the CPU. I will try again later with the touchpad turned off and see if that's it.

Update - yes turning touch pad off or lowering priority definitely fixes the problem. Interesting it only happens when ramping up the CPU.

actually the leds have something to do with the pauses. Since the leds are always on in XP I no longer have the pausing problem but **** the high pitched tone is still active in headphones when I plug the mouse in USB close to the audio jacks :( I guess this is a factory problem.

I can tell you that your keyboard configuration is definitely set to Canada-French.
I guess that when you press Shift+5 you get: %
    Shift+tilde(~*) you get: |

Just try to find where in Windows it is set to that mode.

i restarted my laptop because windows updated and told me to restart, so i did.

after restarting i have had to restart 3-5 times trying to get rid of high cpu usage. everything is running slow and laggy, and programs take a longer time to open. cpu usage is very high now maybe 80-100% constantly without any programs opened.

    any ideas or helpful notes?

Anyone else having a problem with the Direct Console "touch-sensitive" keys on top? The two on the right work for me, but the "eye" and "lightning bolt" don't work. All buttons senses the touch and blinks, but my computer does nothing. Direct Console window use to pop up with the "eye" and Media Center use to open with the "Lighning Bolt". Thanks guys.

You could try a reinstallation of the ATK Hotkey utility, and also of the programs that are supposed to be started by the keys (e.g., Direct Console). That usually fixes things.

I found the following to fix the problem with low volume. I've only verified that the sound improves when playing in Windows Media Player, but it is so much louder now.

In the system tray or control panel, launch the Realtek HD audio manager. After launching, click on the "Sound Effects" tab, check the box labelled "loudness equalization". That's it.

I tested this while playing a DVD movie in windows media player. While the movie is playing, when the checkbox is not checked the volume is low. As soon as I check it, the sound is instantly louder.

Note, as a previous poster stated, the bios volume setting has nothing to do with sound levels in windows.

I did the reinstall on the 4 ATKs. I did get Direct Console to come up with the "eye" button, but Media Center doesn't come up with the "Lightning Bolt" button. Any ideas would be apreciated. Thanks!

OH yeah...I almost forgot. Does the audio in Splashtop work for you guys when you insert the jack for headphones or external speakers? The onboard speakers work fine, but headphone won't work for me.

    Anyone else have this problem?

About the whole "keyboard-missing-strokes" issue. I removed the Synaptics driver and I no longer have the problem. Every key I hit goes right on the screen. :p Thanks to whoever figured that out. (Updating bios didn't work for me)

See if this helps. Right-Click your Task Bar, Click Task Manager, Click Processes Tab, and Click CPU to figure out which program is hogging the processor.

That one's easy to fix, I had the same problem. Go to the language bar (should be docked on the taskbar by default) and click the keyboard icon there. Then select US instead of Canadian-Multilingual. I think there is a way to delete the latter option if you're not a francophone.

Okay...i bought the G50Vt-A1 and reformatted it to XP and installed all the drivers in the CD save the graphics drivers (using Dox optimized) and everything works fine

but yesterday i plugged in a memory stick pro duo and my laptop BSOD'd and restarted and it kept BSOD'ing until i removed the pro duo

i already updated my drivers with vista 32bit drivers from the asus website but it still BSOD's so does anyone know which driver to get?

another irritating problem i have is the fact on my headphones, left is right and right is left....the sound is inverted and i cant do anything about it and i believe i already updated the audio drivers on this laptop

as for the people complaining about the hissing sound when you plug in a USB device on the USB's closest to the headphone/mic jacks, i believe its a hardware problem. try plugging in a USB flash drive into the slot nearest to the audio jacks and transfer files on it, you will notice squeaking sounds when you transfer files. basically the USB on that side gives off the sound of whatever the device thats plugged into it (mice give off a weak hissing sound etc etc)

I have the same problem with plugging in headphones using SplashTop/ExpressGate. No sound - from the laptop or though the phones - same for external speakers...tried mono plug as well, no dice...posted it in another thread.

I have an open ticket with Asus.

if that works thats great but then you have to be willing to sacrifice the synaptics functions. I would assume the touchpad works without them as a mouse but you would lose the scroll function.

Not a big deal if you use a mouse but if I was using only the touchpad that would suck.
