I bought the G50Vt-x6 and of course it does not have Blue-Ray. But for the future I would like to know the model # of the Blue-Ray drive so I can buy it later and swap it into my new laptop!
It is very easy to find out, it is only three or four screws underneath the CD-ROM bay and it pops right out. BTW it is SATA. This pic is of the DVD R/W drive that came with the -X6
X-6 Drive model: GSA-T50N

This info can be found from device manager in Windows or hdparm -I /dev/cdrom in Linux. It is not necessary to disassemble anything. And it's Blu-ray not Blue-Ray
In my G50V-A2, it's a Sony Optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S
Specs here. -
Hmmm ~$170 bucks ain't a bad upgrade to blue ray, although it won't have the custom face on it but I wouldn't care.

Seems like the 12.7mm height drives are of a standard form factor, so when Blueray R/W 12.7mm drives come out, perhaps they would fit into the G50v(t), if they carry a standard form factor and SATA header location and pin-out match. -

They want $225.99 from the ASUS eStore, so going with the OEM one might make sense. I'm not sure if the bezel is the same on the Super Multi as on the Blu-ray drive, but there's a chance you can swap the bezel onto the new drive. If you do the swap please post back with your results

Do check for the bezel compatibility before you upgrade. The lateral and back bezels are more important. If you get those right, the worst that can happen is that you get stuck with the default front/fascia which will not look very well, but will be acceptable.
Also I don't see any particular reason for going for the OEM drive over a generic one. Especially given the price difference (ASUS always tend to overprice OEM replacement ODDs).
G50V/G50VT model # of Blueray drive?
