I've installed a dual boot system with vista and ubuntu.
However, when I'm in Ubuntu I can't get any internet access.
I've tried DCHP and I can't acquire an IP. So I've statically set an IP address to conform to my home network. However, I cannot even ping my router that I'm directly connected too.
So my question is: Are there any issues with the G50V-A2 with Ubuntu? Like perhaps is my ethernet card not supported in Ubuntu and do I need to download some drivers to get it working?

    Thanks!

The NIC isn't supported in the latest release of debian (which Ubuntu is based off), try the latest experimental release (it worked for me in debian). Otherwise you'll have to roll the kernel module in yourself.

Thanks for the reply. Ok... so I'm more or less a newbie to this stuff.
    A few more questions:
So are you suggesting I scrap Ubuntu and use the latest experiemental version of Debian? Or is there an experimental version of Ubuntu (which i couldn't find)? Or do you mean I have to update my kernal? Similar to how this tutuorial ( http://monalisa.cern.ch/blog/2008/09/16/ubuntu-on-asus-g50v/) suggests. Because I don't have internet access it'll be a pain to d/l all those necessary packages and put them on USB flash to get them to Ubuntu.

Any other advice would be great! Thanks again!

I don't use ubuntu, so I can't really tell you exactly what to do. All I really know is that ubuntu is based off debian, and the latest debian build worked for me. I certainly wouldn't recommend going from ubuntu to debian due to the unfriendliness of debian for new users.

But, I do know that you can get the nightly build of ubuntu here:
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/

    Good luck!

EDIT: That link you pasted in is what you need to do.... so I'm wasting my keystrokes! GO READ THAT! ;-)

Thanks again for the reply. And thanks for the link to the nightly build.
Ya, I know once I get home I'll try that stuff form the tutorial. Except it'll be a pain tracking down some of those packages without linux and the internet. I'll have to find them on the internet through windows and get them to my Ubuntu. I was just seeing if there is another way around it.
One more thing... if i got the linux driver for the NIC and went to install it in Ubuntu would that be of any use.... or do I need that new Kernel?

Alternatively, I could scrap Ubuntu and try another Linux OS that is potentially more friendly to the G50V-A2.

The NIC driver should just be a module. Unless it's built into the kernel, it depends. Modules don't usually require a recompilation of the kernel. You might be able to insert the module from a command line during the installer (I don't know ubuntu sry)

In terms of more friendly linux OS, I don't think that's likely, considering the G50V is so new. I haven't tried fedora on here yet but as I said I had to use the experimental release of debian for NIC support to work from the installer.

Just as a quick follow up for completeness.
The daily image of Ubuntu (8.10) did work with the laptop pretty well (since it uses a newer kernel).
So I'm going to hold off till the stable release of Ubuntu 8.10 on Oct. 30.
This release should work just fine with the G50V-A2. So this is an option for anyone fustrated with things not working in 8.04.

MajinFonz, just out of curiosity, did you get Ubuntu 8.10 and still have this problem? Or would your original fix to the problem persist as you upgrade to 8.10?

I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my G50V and am having a problem resembling yours...
