Hey guys, I'm getting a G50VT-X2 soon, and I want to add a second HDD to it.
I know I need to buy a second bracket, and I know Asus e-store has them, however, I don't think they ship to Canada, which is where I reside.
Is there any other way for me to buy a bracket?

Get it from here once in stock:

Call XoticPC or RK Computers.

Both Xotic and RK ship to Canada, unless something changed.

I'm running my second HDD without a bracket.
A little risky but i don't tote my laptop around much. -
I was thinking about doing that too, but that would only be a temporary solution.
I emailed XoticPC about it few days ago, still no response. -

Let us know if the foam has any significant effects on heat dissipation. The foam would actually be better for shocks and bumps than a bracket.

It's a 100GB 7200rpm Hitachi drive, and it runs within +/-2C of the native 320GB 7200rpm Seagate in there. The hottest I've ever seen it go was 48C, and usually after light work (web browsing, etc. I put most of the pagefile on this drive) it idles around 32-36C, and stays under 45C under load-- usually a degree or two cooler than my old Sager. This is all without a cooler but with relatively cool ambient temps (~60F). I imagine if it were summertime I'd have a few more degrees to worry about, but since it's not encased in foam it will still behave like the other drive. -
Sorry to necro a month old post guys.
dtd00d or 4x4- Just wondering if that trick is still working for you guys. I've been checking the Asus estore now for about a month for the bracket and it's still out of stock and I can't find them anywhere else either. I've got a new 500GB drive ready to go and I just can't wait.
When you say foam do you mean you put more of the kind of stuff that's already in there (thin soft foam) or somethin like styrofoam, and how exactly did you connect the tin foil. Could I bug you for some pictures maybe or a bit more in depth explanation?
Thanks in advance.

You might try this site:

I just cut up some anti-static foam (most of the times it's pink) and shoved it around. Still working good.

You do not need a brackett. Use any vinyl or even electric tape to insulate the Hdd bottom. Use a bit of foam or double sided 3m tape to hold it in place,.

Thanks for the suggestions
stealth - Says they are in stock but the shipping is a bit too much for me, gonna be moving soon and don't know how long it will take to get here. After I get settled in if the asus store (still no response from them) doesn't have them in stock maybe I'll give that site a try.
4x4 - That'll probably be what I do, problem is can't find any anti-static foam. Asked in every electronic store I could find... nothing. Thought I had some floating around here but I musta thrown it out.
G2P - Maybe I'm just paranoid but wouldn't that mess a bit with the heat dissipation, seems this laptop runs pretty warm already.
Anyway, since it's only gonna be a temp fix I'll probably just use some normal foam I've got around. Keep an eye on the temp while I'm using it... I'll do it tomorrow morning if there's no reply to this with any other ideas. -
EDIT: Nevermind...the info's already been posted

Installed it this morning, just put a little foam around the edges.
Looks like its working ok so far. Doing a full format of 500GB and CPUID shows 44C right now and max at 46C about 70% into format been about an hour. For reference, the primary drive is setting around 36 been doing some light browsing and listening to tunes. I'll see what it settles down to after the format and check back in with you all. -
Finished formatting, both drives are now idling around 36-37C, new drive maxed out at 46C and I've seen the old one get up to 47 before so it seems the foam has no impact on temperature. Copied 20 GB of junk to new drive for fun, everything seems to be working fine. Thanks for the input everyone.
Before I start a new thread, maybe someone here knows the answer. I've searched around a bit but can't find anything.
In Vista when a drive is getting low on space (~10% I think) the bar under it in explorer turns red. Is there a way to change when it turns red (different percentage or set amount of space)? I have a 1.5 TB external drive that still has over 100GB and it's red. I know it's not a big deal but I was just wondering if it's possible.
Thanks.
