I wanted to put my old monitor on as a secondary display, but after setting it up my GPU is running full blast despite the fact that I'm doing nothing but web browsing. It can't possibly be taking so much power that it needs to be full speed at 70C. I don't want to kill my card by running it like this.

Has anyone gotten an external monitor extension running without the graphics card going nuts?

The funny thing is, even though the GPU is running at full strength, there's a little bit of desktop lag. =(

NOTE: This is not with the OC running in my sig. I'm running just GTS speeds right now.

What version driver are you using? It may be a driver issue.

I'm using the 186.03 drivers from Nvidia.

I googled quickly and I think it has to do with Powermizer not working when external monitors are connected. Sucks.

I believe you are right. I'll see if I can find the fix. Your GPU will be fine.

Never had issues under 185.85 DOX, I switched to 186.03 a 500 point drop in 06 sent me running as half of the games I play would most likley be affected. I never did any further testing to notice the problem. Only some of the latest games might not have been affected as the ill effects observed were only dx9 shader 3 related.

In fact I am pretty sure where the score went down between 185.85 DOX and the Nvidia 186.03 was shader 3.0 all other scores where normal.

    ^ that.
it happens with every driver. you could lock it to use only lowest with rivatuner, but then you'd have to restart to game.

i got a good result. im running mine hooked up to my hdtv. and i am using nvidia system tools to limit clocks if it passes 63c. right now it is running at 275 300 388 and 58c
but i have to turn off that profile when i want to play a game. :( but as long as i dont fry my gpu im ok with it.

Interesting, yeah the clocks go up to extra to run both displays at the same time.

There is plenty of reason for needing the extra processing power If i am extending the desktop to the other monitor, but shouldnt need it for cloning (both displays showing the same thing at the same res). Also shouldnt need full blast either way.
