G71 is $1650 on newegg right now, and the G50VT-X2 is $1350....size of the screen is less important than the overall quality of the laptop, thats why im comparing these two. and from a close look at the specs, the only difference is the screen size for a big price difference.

both include the 9800M GS, but the 17" has 1900x1200 screen and the 15" has 1680x1050, both have same RAM and HD....but i have a few question that i don't know about, thanks in advance guys.

    1. does the keyboard lag still exist on the G50? if so, thats a dealbreaker for me.

    2. does the G71 have any problems that are common?

    3. how is the quality of the screen on both laptops? are they crisp and bright?

    4. hows the quality of the speakers? crappy, acceptable, good?

and this is a HELL OF A DEAL compared to everything i've compared it too, the only better deal was the Sager's NP5793...but i was reading about the ridiculous customer service people were having with them. many rants about how unprofessional they were and how there were some ridculous quality issues with some of the laptops. this pretty much scared me into getting an Asus, which i hear are tanks in build quality

Its all relative, only question for you is if that extra screen size is worth that extra cash.
I havent heard of any real problems with any of the models.
Seen a few comments about the microphone issues but they seem to be in both but not serious issues

The way I see it is it really depends how much you are into gaming. If you are like me, I like playing at the Native Resolution at max possible settings on any game (Crysis being the exception). The 9800m GS can push MOST games at 1920x1200 at max/high settings, but in the year to come it's highly doubtful, so I opted for the 1680x1050 resolution and I couldn't be happier. However, if you need the absolute most space you can get no matter what and you don't really mind what resolution you game at, def. get the 1920x1200 if the price difference isn't outrageous.

    1. I bought the G50VT-X2 a few weeks ago and I don't have any keyboard lag at all, and I didn't do anything special to get rid of it. I just started up the laptop when I received it and started installing my programs.

    2. Wouldn't know, don't have it, sorry :(

    3. As far as the G50VT-X2 goes the screen is sharper than my 24' Samsung LCD. It is the sharpest and brightest screen I have seen on a laptop.

    4. Speakers suck. I'm not going to lie one bit, they blow big ones. If you are planning on listening to alot of music invest in speakers. I have a 5.1 Logitech set so this wasn't a big issue to me, but when I unplug my speakers and hear the on board speakers I want to take the laptop apart and disconnect them. I personally don't like them one bit. But with that said don't let that distract you from the laptop, it has amazing build quality and it's great. I couldn't be happier. Sure there are better laptops out there, but I bet most of them are going to be $2000+ easily.

I would say it depends on what you want for size and weight... The G50vt is bigger than a normal 15.4" as far as how wide it is but the g71 will be even more wide, plus it will be deeper and weigh more because its bigger screen and has bigger battery pack.

I am happy with my G50vt-a2 with the exception of the keyboard lag issue... I have had a total of 3 G50vt-a2 and on G50v-a2.. All the VT's have the lag, my G50v didnt, which is funny because that was the model that started it and had the wrost according to past posts... If you uninstall touchpad drivers it stops and you get basic mouse function... I am sure they will fix it sometime with a new update... They seem to be getting close.

the thing about the keyboard lag is that not everyone get's it. the complainers are louder then the satisfied. which the complainers are probably less then 5% of the g50vt population

honestly, its not worth the cash to me, but if i buy in the next week, it'll be the 15" given that both have equal quality

First thing about technology: Nothing is ever guaranteed, lol

But yeah, IF you have that issue that should fix it. And yeah, the screen on the X2 is extremely good. If you're used to working on a 24'' then you'll be fine on the 1680x1050 with 15.4, I used to have a 24'' and I love the screen on the X2. Ive got a screenshot of Vista on the desktop at 1680x1050 if you wanna see it just to be sure.

That's nothing. The announced Sony P series has 1600 by 76* (almost WXGA++) on a 8 in screen.

Yeah, but at what point does it get "too small"? I've seen 15.4 inch screens that native at 1900x1200 and they look good in games, but the text is pretty small, small enough that it is difficult to read at sometimes.
