Would it be possible to replace the G50Vt screen with one from the G51Jx so you could get a bigger resolution?

The case sizes appear to be the same from rough measurements.

No. There are a few threads on this already, search up but you need to match two critical things:

1: Display connector type (this is fairly universal)
2: backlight connector (CCFL or LED). The G50vt has a CCFL inverter, G51Jx is LED backlit.

    I replaced my screen in mine from a 15.6" 1366x768 to a 15.4" 1680x1050. Zero regrets.

So is there any other modification that needs to be done for that swap? Will the different sized LCD fit back inside the casing that I already have?

Where did you find your replacement?

I'm looking to do the same thing, the 1366x768 is just too small of a res for me.

Yeah I actually had to gorilla tape and superglue the screen to the top crossbar, aligning it by hand to the nearest millimeter. No joke. I was off by about 0.5mm, but I can still see all the pixels :)

This is because 15.6" has different dimensions and aspect ratio (obviously) than a 15.4", and the screw holes don't line up at all on the two different screens, so it's not even like you could use extra long screws. I created some cardboard shims that I wedged in place and then duct taped everything around the frame. I wouldn't recommend this if you're a perfectionist. I suppose the best way would be to create custom side brackets that accept screws from both the new screen and the side brackets.

Also you need a new bezel for a 15.4" screen. Asus has them in and out of stock all the time: http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=4922&catid=606
Stalk it till it's available, took me two weeks.

I hope this informs your decision at least... it was totally worth it in the end.

Unless the pixels are different, no. The aspect ratio is still 16:10 which means something is awry here. Don't buy from ScreenTek, it's crazy overpriced. Try ScreenCountry or eBay.

so the G50V lid and the G50Vt lid are different? Not the bezel but the lid itself?

The dimension measurements people give are identical for the two units.

Need more people disassembling their units and documenting it!

The lids are exactly the same, afaik. 15.6" screens have always been 16:9, and 15.4" screens have always been 16:10. Here are common resolutions off the top of my head:

    16:9
    1366x768
    1600x900
    1920x1080

    16:10
    1280x800
    1440x900
    1680x1050
    1920x1200

You might be confusing the lid for the bezel perhaps. The lid sizes are the same, however the front bezel size changes which is why I had to order one (since I went from 16:9 to 16:10). The only thing that changed from G50v>>G50vt is going from a 9700m to a 9800m. Going from G50>>G51 changed the screen type. However, all of the chassis sizes are the same, and thus the lids are also the same and interchangeable.

No, know what the dimensions are for resolutions. What I was suggesting is that I was hoping that I wouldn't have to replace the lid if I changed to a 15.4" screen. I don't see Asus being pro-active enough to change the parts so that the screens wouldn't be interchangeable (aka have two sets of screw holes or two different LCD brackets that would fit the same screw holes in the lid).

In that case, I would be able to order the LCD for a G50Vt-X2 (15.4") screen and replace the G50Vt-X5 (15.6") screen.

The biggest problem right now is that I don't know how the screen would line up inside or if another set of LCD brackets are even available. According to the Asus site ( http://estore.asus.com/shop/category.asp), there are no LCD mounting brackets listed. So would this mean that it comes with another piece? The lid or the bezel perhaps? Or would the one inside be able to be reused?

I'm not quite willing to tear down my currently working laptop until I can get some more answers.

I see. I think I was referring to the plastic part of the lid when you are really referring to the bracket inside. I didn't see anything on Asus's site, either. This is why it became such an unprofessional job for me. It worked, but I wouldn't recommend it for the faint of heart.
