No matter what I do I cannot get my microphone to not sound like a muffled tin can at best. There is no point using it what so ever as no one can understand me. Does anyone else have this problem and what can I do to fix it?
Also since I have your attention does anyone know how I can map the media keys (function + arrows) to work with winamp and not just open windows media centre?

For the second question, you may have a look at the ASUS Notebook Keys("customize your ASUS hotkeys" in the Info Booth). Not sure it can do what you say, but it's worth a try.
-
make sure yuor microphone settings are correct..
right click on the speaker icon on your task bar, go to recording devices and play with the settings,,
you can pull up sound recorder and check to see how the setting affect -
i'm pretty sure you can just enable global hotkeys in winamp, as that worked for making my media keys on my G1S change tracks for winamp. the only that doesn't work is the "PWR" button I have...it still opens windows media center

Yea man i have the same exact problem, When i went in ventrilo my friends told me it sounded like I was in a garbage can...Please someone help find a fix for this or post their settings if their microphone sounds at least half decent.
Also, for those who own it, how is your mic? whats the sound quality like...because I want to know if the mic just sucks or if its the settings. -

Two things.
There's a setting if you go to the realtek control panel... it's:
start->run->rtsndmgr.cpl
Go to the microphone tab and uncheck noise suppression
make sure 'mic' is all the way up under the windows mixer:
start->run->sndvol32
Go to the options menu and make sure 'advanced controls' is set... click on mic volume's 'Advanced' button and enable mic boost at the bottom under 'other controls'
Edit: I am on XP, the location of the mic boost might be different in vista i forget... it's in there somewhere dang nabbit! -
Mic sucks. I use a Logitech webcam/mic as the built-in mic and camera are ultra low quality with low res images. What happened? My W3V mic is awesome.
-
Hmm that makes me semi nervous, because why would i pay 1350 for a laptop with extremely crappy web cam and mic...What am i paying for? What makes this laptop worth it?
Some of my friends have 1000 - 1200 dollar machines and their webcam/mic quality is great, and their laptop run the same games mine does perfectly fine..One i believe is a Gateway FX and one is a Toshiba Q something...Id appreciate if someone would explain to me, why this laptop is worth it compared to those?
What benefits am i getting in sticking with this laptop over those? Why is this laptop more expensive than those? -

I have absolutely no problems on my G50V-A2 please try the steps I outlined above it is not a hardware issue.
-
Same problem here....I think its just a crappy mic, I had use the microphone boost bar cause everyone could barely hear me. And when I record things and play them back they don't sound so good.
I expected something better since it looks like its got a 3 way microphone array (2 in the front, one in the back) but I could be mistaken... -

Tweaked it a bit more in the control realtek panel and the turn off noise suppression and boost mic suggestions helped, but it still sounds like a crappy mic. At least my friends can hear me now. Thanks.
As for the laptop I am sure they put all the money getting the rediculous power into the tiny thing and just skimped on the mic/webcam. Oh well. I bought it for gaming mainly not for talking. If I wanted just a talking machine I would have spent A LOT less.
Also enable global hotkeys is the first thing I did in winamp and it didn't do a thing. -

First, download Notebook Keys v1.3:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=150016
Extract both exe's somewhere, preferably to its own folder under C:\Program Files, then run AsusNbKeys.exe first and then AsusNbKeysCtrl.exe. Set up your keystrokes like in my first screenshot... make sure to click 'save all changes to system' before you click close.
Then go to winamp in your preferences under global hotkeys and enable both options and set your actions and hotkeys like in my second screenshot... you only need to set stop, previous in playlist, next in playlist and play/pause. You set the hotkeys by clicking on the text field labeled 'Hotkey', pressing Fn and whatever arrow key, it will grab the keystroke (that you have mapped it to with nbkeys) and then click 'Set'.
You just have to make sure to add AsusNbKeys.exe to your startup folder for it to work all the time.Attached Files:

I have the same problem. Low mic volume. I've checked everywhere. No "Noise Suprression" and volume is set at 100%. My family couldn't hear me using the mic by the webcam. If I use Microphone Boost, the mic is a little bit louder but you hear the noise all the time.
Driver version: 6.0.1.5645
I'm disappointed by the mic quality. Do you think I might get a lemon? Maybe I need to buy an external mic but it's the sound hardware problem, then it won't make any difference. -
its not a lemon...the built in mic sucks...it also sucked in my asus c90s so i think its just that way lol...
Either way, if you want high quality mic/sound then look into getting a headset... theres plenty of reviews here and it should help you find something with way better quality
G50Vt worst built in microphone ever?
