I just got my very first enthusiast laptop the G50Vt-A1! So far its really cool and I cannot get enough of all the features! I am cleaning the system out right now and am going to install better gfx drivers and see what this thing can do. Anyone else with these laptops tell me what your experience is and what you have tweaked.
I am going to try and optimize Vista as much as I can as I want the fastest experience. I have been on my 3.2ghz C2D desktop so I have never had a need to optimize it before.
Also I am going to try overclocking the vid card and I'll post my results as I hope I can get this GS to a GTS!

Nice to see people getting them in. I got mine in last night. I will have to get used to vista.
I love the looks of this laptop. I need to get a review once I get everyting worked out. -
I should be getting my A2 on Monday. I am very excited, this is going to be my first gaming laptop, as well as my first gaming computer (I do not demand the highest settings, I am perfectly fine with making compromises). I am new to all this tweaking stuff, like overclocking, and using raid. I do not really understand either. I hope we can get some early adopters to post their results and opinions on these types of tweaks. Monday can't come soon enough!

Well I have used this laptop for a bit today and had a game session with my buddy. I can say that it tears through anything to do with the source engine and considering the display is 1680x1050 thats pretty good for a laptop. I have everything on the highest with 4xAA and don't dip under 40FPS in Garry's mod and obviously am 60+ fps in CSS. One thing I noticed is when I put it into the turbo overclocked mode for the processor ~2.8ghz after gaming on it for a while and then going into GPU-Z it says it is running @ 1700mhz with a multiplier of 6 which is really strange. I am wondering if it is throttling itself because of the heat of if this is just a bug. If I play some games with the normal clock speeds and then check everything is fine. I don't think that its downlocking though cause I would have felt a snag or hiccup while gaming. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be helpful.
Also another thing I found was that Powermizer does not downclock the video card in the driver supplied (179.14) which is absolutely terrible for bettery life effectively giving me about a hour on a full charge! I think I am just going to live with that until 180.44 comes out and then get those on here and hope that works.
Do you guys notice that the quick console button light always stays on? Thats strange! Anyways guys please tell me about your experiences and tweaks! -
What are the A1/A2's dimensions? BTOTech's website says 15.5" x 10.5" x 1.1"-1.6", but Gentech and I think a few other places say 14.6" x 10.3" x 1.3"-1.6", which is almost an inch narrower.
-
I measured my G50V-A1 and it's 15.25” x 10.5” x 1.5”-1.65” This is with the lid closed and measured from the table (so it includes the rubber feet)

our measurements are actual. I check the specsheets on any new models. they are generally acurate within 1%
-
Do you know if the G50VT-A1 is compitable with XP Pro? I know that it will only recognize some of the RAM, but I am worried about all my other programs.
Thanks for reading! i can't wait to get it.
I apologize if i have broken some forum rule by mentioning a sale... -

It will work with xp but the process of installing xp is not that easy. You should start by reading this http://btoforums.com/showthread.php?p=10017

I realize that i cross-posted this question...sorry everyone -
Thanks again! -
Seriously since SP1 vista 64 is great. It blew so hard before SP1 and the tech was way behind what it is now. The laptops these days have the hardware to run Vista on a laptop and Vista has been optimized enough. This whole backlash loading on XP to me seems ridiculous especially when most people are putting on XP 32 on a computer with 4GB of RAM and a vid card to boot! You are just losing resources!
On another note I benched the A1 on default settings in 3DMark06 and got 8130 and then used turbo extreme on the proc ~2.8ghz and got 8220. I'm used to a desktop that can pull 14000 easily at 1680*1050, but hey this will have to do! -

Just threw on the 180.44 drivers and lost 200 3dmarks so you guys might want to stick with the drivers that it comes with (179.14) although the new ones have much better multiple monitor support and physx support built in which is nice and the reason I am sticking with them.

i just finished review ... link is in lounge.. uploading to forum shortly... but as for the weight its:
G50 no Battery 6lbs 12.70 oz
Small Battery 11.60 oz
got the other components in detail in the review.. -
I'd just like to note that the 179.14 drivers that come with this laptop do not have powermizer working. If you value your battery life I highly suggest updating ASAP. I just recently put on 180.44 and everything is A-OK now.

Has anyone figured out how to kill the blue light that stays on unless you take the battery out on the quick keys that gets you into the little mini linux OS. It is very annoying and probably slowly eats up the battery!

I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to make the multimedia function keys work for winamp and not just bring up windows media centre every time you use them.
Also I noticed when you plug in the HDMI the gfx card clocks itself up. -
In addition to this i often would have to reset my xp computer at least once a day during a intense gaming session 10 hrs +, this does not occur with vista it manages memory much better.
I say take the time to learn vista and don't go into it with the mentality VISTA SUCKS. Go into it with the same mentality a first timer to linux would, that you need to learn the new setup and way to use it, and you shall not regret staying with vista.
I was a XP fanboi, only reason i even gave vista a try was because i got it free from my schools msdn and i didn't plan on keeping it installed i only put it on my secondary computer to learn it and get usetoo it, well i am use too it and i love it it def blows XP out of the water in every way possible if you have the system to support it once its tweaked .
One last note:
Vista is annoying as all hell when first installed for the above average computer user, the prompts become insanely annoying however they can all be disabled. -
i just bought G50Vt-A2 and its excellent but theres a problem, sometimes, my cursor seem to suck for a sec or two and the fan will get a lil louder as if its loading something(just for 2 sec). I am not sure why this happened, any1 experiecning this?

What is a normal memory usage when doing nothing? I am constantly at 41%. I am planning on doing a clean install of Vista 64 in order to minimize memory consumption and just to empty out the stuff I don't need. I also want a new partition setup as I do not like the current 4 way split the A2 is using now. I was wandering if anyone can comment on or recommend ViciousXUSMC's setup and instructions described in his review for the G50V. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=283137
The vista setup is in the Raid 0 instructions but even without Raid 0, his vista installion makes sense in case of future problems. Any advice would help -
Just reformatted and reinstalled steam and xfire and a few other things and I sit at 33% idle.
-
I have decided to give Vista 64 a fair chance. I have been reading some tutorials and it seems to be very similar to XP in terms of basic usage.
It appears that the best bet is to use the included OS disc to do a clean install soon after getting my system. And then optimize it with the newest drivers and Vista settings (shutting down prompts and anything else I should know). Then I can image that (with Acronis).
I would really appreciate instructions or links that might help me with this.
Thanks for reading! -
ordered my A1, looks like a great machine! Looking forward to it getting here (in 10-20 days time... :/)
Anybody have any major issues with either machine yet? -
-
X1 review on front page seemed to make a point that the display has narrow viewing angle, and less than impressive contrast ratio. Can an A series owner confirm whether similar problem occur with higher res screen?
-
I have an A2 and I think its nice bright colors but the angle is not all that great, but is better than some so I would not worry.
I think the only thing asus did wrong on this notebook is the size of it... I dont even mind the weight as much but the fact that its the EXACT same size as our dell 17" notebooks and same size as our macbook pro 17" is nuts...
I didnt order the 17" because it weighs a lot more... Why couldnt they fit a 17" screen on this same notebook, lol.. The wegith would be a tad more but not as much more as the G71 is... -
Thanks on the update, seems now the x1's screen could be of lower quality as well as being lower resolution.
Also I'm surprised that G71 no longer offer sli as earlier G70 somehow managed; consider its physically much larger than G50, Asus could surely have done a redesign of G71 to make it slightly more compact, seeing as it has one less GPU now. -
been using my g50vt-a1 for 3 weeks now...few issues i wanted to talk about
1) the driver/bios updates at asus support...which ones are actually good...didnt want to risk with anything
2) i've got this dead/inactive pixel at the lower left side of the screen...barely noticeable unless the screen has a dark image...you guys think the returning hassle is worth it?
3) i've pulled out the battery and just using it on AC mode...shouldn't harm anything right?
Thanks -
Hey guys.
I have the g50vt a1 and im loving it. It is fantastic
