    I first posted this:

    Every time I shut down my laptop (home premium 64) it says updating stage 2 of 3 and does its thing and then shuts down. When I start up it says updating stage 3 of 3 and does its thing for a bit then starts up as normal. Once I am in the system it works fine, but windows update says there are no updates that have just installed and it is really annoying waiting every time to shut down and start up and especially when I am on battery and don't want to kill it. I hae no clue where to start... any thoughts?

    Then a reply suggested:

    You cannot install some updates or programs

    Method 9: Clear the temporary file and restart the hotfix installation or the service pack installation
    Note Skip this method if the operating system is Windows 2000.

    To clear the temporary file and restart the hotfix installation or the service pack installation, follow these steps:

    1. Delete all the tmp*.cat files in the following folders:

    %systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
    %systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

    2. Delete all the kb*.cat files in the following folders:

    %systemroot%\System32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
    %systemroot%\System32\CatRoot\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}

    3. Delete all the oem*.* files from the %systemroot%\inf folder.

    4. At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

    net stop cryptsvc
    ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2
    net start cryptsvc
    exit

    5. Restart the failed hotfix installation or service pack installation.

    I tried this and it worked for a bit, but when I put some new video drivers on I got a looping BSOD and was unable to boot normally, in Safe Mode or into last known good configuration... it would all bsod.

    I then recovered my computer and set everything up again and it was working properly then the configuring updates problem came up a couple days later and I did the above method again not knowing it would cause the looping BSOD problem. Well it did and I recovered again today and I am back in the same position. THe looping updates are killing me and there is NO way im going back to try the above method again. I read somewhere else that someone with the same laptop was having these issues and in a thread on another site someone mentioned that a version of vlite did that. I am wondering if Asus used vlite to make their recovery disks ALso does anyone know what I can do to fix this. Also I can`t type a question mark it just looks like this É hahaha! it always gets worse I guess.....

    Someone please help....

    Did you try waiting for a few days / a couple of reboots? I also had this problem with a Vista laptop, I think the recurring updates went away after a number of reboots.

    Well its been a few days and a whole heck of a lot of "updates" and its still chugging away. It does it like every 2 or 3 times i shut down and then when it starts up after that. It is erratic and its pissing me off!!!

    I had the same issue, running CCleaner sorted it out for me.
