Before buying this laptop for my girlfriend, I have a question...Does the recovery disk (for clean install) have an option to revert to 32-bit Vista clean install??? Unfortunately, it is not mentioned in the ASUS guide at the top of this forum...I have had issues playing w/ 64-bit on my gateway P6860FX, as it always came up with the BSOD, so I reverted to 32 bit from the included OS recovery disc. So, just in case her 64-bit bluescreens (especially when playing games), I want to revert to 32-bit if the cause of the BSOD cannot be pinpointed.

I don't think so... my G50V-A2 didn't come with 32 bit media and the recovery disc offers only options about partitioning before you blast it away.

Most recovery CDs come with both 32 bit and 64 bit OS versions, but it's probably best to get someone who has experience with the laptop the varify this first.

I have a G50Vt-X1 and it does not come with a 32-bit recovery disc, unless I'm missing something....

But the drivers are Vista 32/64 bit compatible.

My G50V-A2 has 64 bit only recovery disc. You could always just purchase an oem 32 bit. Ultimate is only $189.00 at tiger direct

I think ASUS recovery disks are either 32bit, or 64bit; not both.

Sorry to (kinda) thread-jack here, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows for sure whether it's possible to actually carry out a clean Vista install using the g50Vt-x1 recovery disc?

I'd love to get a clean Vista install on this thing without all the preload junk. :x

ASUS Info Booth,FAQ question #14. Method may not work with newer computers, including G50Vt, but it's worth a try.

What game or application were you running at the time?

It's possible that your problems were an OS install or hardware issue as the 64-bit Vista doesn't really have much problems as all running 32-bit software. (I have 3 machines with 64-bit Vista and have had NO PROBLEMS playing whatever games I've thrown at it... no "64-bit" BSODs either...)

I'm pretty sure you're good to go with a 64-bit OS... perhaps the bloatware Gateway threw on there with your 64-bit install didn't play nicely with each other?

32 bit apps run in the WoW (windows on windows) layer on 64 bit and I've had some problems with games too... nothing terrible but there are stability problems in some cases, 32 bit is still the best for games IMHO

Not with the recovery discs. It's possible with a retail vista disc, if you know somebody with one (you don't need a retail license, the OEM license will work with retail media unlike XP)

The reference I gave also applies to using the recovery disks. But as I said, it's not guaranteed to work for newer computers.

Thanks for the info guys, I did read through the reference guide but I wanted to check before I actually committed to nuking my current install only to discover it wouldn't work.

I'll just borrow a disc from a friend then, seems like the easiest option. I assume I'll need to extract my key from this current install beforehand and SLIC will take care of the rest?

Your product key should be on a label on the bottom of your notebook, that's all you need... just make sure the disc is retail Premium or Ultimate

Oh that's even easier than I expected, I'd read somewhere that the key on the label wasn't good for a fresh install.

    Thanks again for the info!

Right.. it used to not be, in vista they changed that thankfully, it makes life a lot easier when you don't have to wait for replacement OEM media in the mail, for instance!

edit: oh yeah FYI... it lets you do an anytime upgrade (home premium to ultimate) without waiting for the disc from microsoft too... I did that on my G1S with an Ultimate disc

if i installed ultimate 64bit, coming from premium 32bit, i had to remove the hidden 'recovery' partition, because it gave errors after the install.

it sucked because i kinda lost everything due to this (my own stupid fault)
but it can be helpful maybe...

I was running counter-strike and basically any steam game...I did check if all the drivers were updated...they were and I have diagnosed my hardware and it came up with no problems...I used memtest to also check the memory...
