I'm running around the net these day finding a candidate for my FIRST laptop. After reading a lot of information and reviews about MSI GT627, I have leaned to ASUS G50Vt. I have only around 1200USD (max 1300). There're a lot of version of G50Vt, from A1, B1, to X1, X2, X5, X6. The differences in price are noticeable. Can anyone help me choose the best version for me? I'm looking at the newegg's G50Vt-X6.

The ones on Newegg all have ASUS's worldwide warranty and a 1 year accidental damage plan, so that is a definate plus. The X1 and X5 (BestBuy version) only have a 1 year warranty and accidental damage coverage has to be bought through BB. All G50Vt models have 4 GB of RAM and the 9800M GS. Other than that, the processors and HDD are the major differences. The X5 each has a 9-cell battery that sticks out the back a little bit, The other X# models have 6-cell batteries that are more flush with the notebook.
I have heard reports, though as a non-owner cannot confirm, that the one-touch overclocking won't work if you upgrade the processor. This might be a factor to consider, as the A# series contains 9000 series processors with twice the L2 Cache of the 7000/8000 series Peryn processors. Granted, the A# series of the G50 line is a bit more expensive.
Right now, the X1 is on sale through Best Buy for $950 and is a hell of a deal. If the warranty and accidental coverage is need, go for the X2 or X6, they will give you good bang for your buck and have great warranties. -
Note that you cannot return a laptop to NewEgg: it's exchange only if you get one DOA or just decide you don't want it.
Also note ASUS has a February rebate going on certain models, check their web site for details. -

I don't like bestbuy, their G50Vt don't have bluetooth (and there're only X1 and X5). On the other hand, bestbuy's X5 don't tell the battery is 6-cell or 9-cell. Now I think that X6 is the best for my wallet.

I have had my x-6 from newegg for two weeks now and love it. Feel like I got the most for my money. There are a few things that are not what I would love like the volume, but for the money and my needs it is fabulous. Good luck on your purchase.

Does Newegg's extended warranty come from the same entity Circuit City used? (I sincerely hope not!)
Love my X1 though. To my surprise it came with DDR2-800 RAM -- got it on clearance ($810 instead of $999). I did order the 9 cell battery (had to dig to confirm the model is compatible) and a second 320GB HD (Western Digital). Will be getting Vista Ultimate so I can use bitlocker... -

I have found a X3 on ebay, he said that he just buy it and then changed his mind, but he want to sell it to someone really need it. My cousin ordered it, and it will be here for me in the first two weeks of March. Hope that X3 is not DOA (Dead on Arrival). The seller didn't even turn it on, every thing is new.

I've ordered the -x6 earlier this week, which will arrive very soon. Before I ordered the laptop, I've done quite a bit of research and came up with the same question. The table in this post pretty accurately describe the differences.

The -x6 is essentially the -x2, except that it sports the newer P8700 processor (2.53GHz).
Only thing that was not 100% confirmed in the table is whether the -x3 has a 5400rpm drive (on NCIX.com certainly says it is a 5400rpm drive). Newegg also carries the -x3. I believe the -x3 does come with the bag and mouse (like the A1/A2) based on the NCIX forum description as well as the screenshot at Newegg. -
I highly doubt that the X3 has a 5400rpm drive. All the other G50Vt models have 7200 drives.
