So i've noticed Best Buy has it, Anyone have any idea when resellers will get these? It looks like a kickass notebook, seems like almost a replacement for the old G1s. So yea lets find this badboy somewhere else besides the weak one bestbuy has!

I think that the G50 you are looking at is a Best Buy deal only. Asus seems to make deals with specific dealers and provides them a special laptop model that has certain specs only. They are usually noted by the -X after the model name. Newegg has a couple of Newegg specific Asus laptops only, and you can't find them elsewhere.

They might release one with a new Montevina chipset later to the better online retailers, but dunno when that will be. (It'll be more expensive too, that older CPU is what helps drive down the cost.)

Yea, but Best Buy typically only has a model exclusive notebook, not the whole notebook itself. Normally its just a watered down version so its sells in B&M stores. But the resellers have always got better versions of them.

Well the resellers havn't made any comment on it so I assume they aren't planning on getting them very soon

I have to agree with Adam. It seems that a new G series for the new Montevina processors aren't going to be out for a while, as there has been little mention.

Best Buy just gets those special deals that aren't all that great.

And without that wonderful insurance that you can get from Asus, I definitely wouldn't consider it. (None of my computers have ever been bought at a store, but my relatives all buy theirs from the store, my grandparents shop at the specialty stores though, like Mac stores.)

Well i think the chipset is still montevina so technically the asus g50 can be upgraded to a better cpu on your own without waiting for resellers, don't quote me on it though

Hmm, I thought that the T5750 was a Santa Rosa one though? I am not entirely sure, but I thought the new Montevina don't go below the P7xxx naming. Maybe though, but I don't know if they'll make that new G50 available to anything anytime soon, as they seem to only have that one for Best Buy at the moment.

Shipments arrive on weekly basis now, and we should know whether or not we'll be getting a shipment this week for certain by Wednesday night. Thanks!

Ooh, now that's promising to hear! Well, then you'll have to check the computer sites weekly to see if they get them in then, OP.

That's good to hear that Asus is shipping in the new computers on a weekly basis now, makes me feel more confident in when I'll be ready to order my computer if I ultimately end up choosing the M50 for me.

Hmm, alright then. I wasn't sure, but I guess you are positive, then it is.

I was looking at some kind of Montevina chart of some kind, but I didn't see anything about any T5xxx or P5xxx chipsets, but I may not have been looking at the right spot.

It just won't be all that "spectacular" as some of the top Montevina ones, I guess.

We are no longer under NDA, but the numbers of units most online resellers received were horrendously small compared to the bigger guys. We had to start taking preorders again three days after the Montevina launch.

It isn't a montevina chip that comes in the Best Buy version but it can handle the monevina chips if you were to replace it.

All G50s are based on Montevina chipset, and supports both Merom and Penryn.

Wow, compared to the Best Buy one, those are horrendously expensive. They also have more stuff, but still, $400 comes out to 30% more than the BB config. This from Gentech, who usually has the best pricing compared to the other resellers - I guess they retail for $1649 and $1849 or 1699 and 1899 respectively.

Only differences between the a1 and a2 seem to be that the a1 has 2 250GB 5400RPM drives and the a2 has 2 200GB 7200RPM drives plus a blu-ray drive...

also the best buy one has a 16:9 ratio while this one is 16:10

Well, the difference between the Best Buy version and the G50VM-A1 from gentech is the screen resolution, hard drive, CPU and warranty. I personally think the $400 difference is well worth all these upgrades :) Not sure if Best Buy's G50 comes with the free bag and mouse though...

A general question about this laptop. Does anyone happen to know if this laptop will only come in Orange? When they announced it there was a picture of what looked like a Red one but it may have just been the angle the picture was taken.

I don't think so since the 5 hotkeys listed in the product spec says it's Touchpad Lock,Internet access,Splendid,Instant Fun, Power4Gear eXtreme

G50 comes only in orange afaik. The red one is the 17" G70

There is second slot in the BB version, but it'll probably need a hard drive mounting kit. Not sure if it's in RAID.

EDIT: Well, it's been confirmed that the G50 would have Express Gate :)

This is killing me... I had my heart set on a Sager NP5796, but i'm such an asus fanboy after having my G1s :(
The only thing i'm worried about is the gaming performance. If its anywhere close to the 8800gts, i'm sold.

Like viperabyss mentioned, the Best Buy version comes with a less powerful CPU, HOWEVER, I will have to stress again that any Asus notebooks purchased from Best Buy doesn't come with the 2 year global warranty + 1 year accidental damage protection. You will also be getting a lower res screen. :(

Well, just wanted to share with you the exciting news... I placed an order for the G50V-A1 with gentech :D
Now I've gotta play the waiting game :(

Vladk, keep in mind that the G series notebooks are usually built more sturdily than say the F series. And even though the G50 is more expensive than the M50 or F8, it's definately not overly priced. It's also quite rare to see a dual hard drive setup in a 15" notebook.

Sorry to get a little off topic, but with all of this talk of the G50, is there any news/speculation of when the G71 would make it's appearance?...i really like the specs of the G50, even though the reseller version is a little pricey for me, i'd really like it if it came in 17".

well the local bestbuy had one of these in the box in their laptop cages, too bad the screen res is so low, the rest of the specs are good(thats assuming the processor can be upgraded easily in the future). The screen resolution is what was turning me off on this laptop.

Well I saw that Gentech has the G50V open to pre-order now.

Its specs as I thought are definitly much upgraded compared to the Best Buy model.

    Better Screen
    Better Ram 800mhz vs 667mhz
Better CPU 2.0 vs 2.53 thats a 26% increase(faster clock speed but also its a Montevina CPU with 1066fsb the BB version is the old 667fsb and its not as power efficant)
Dual HDD's almost 2x the space
    Better Warrenty 2x the warrenty
The "Goodies" (The Mouse & Bag)

If you take the time to go look up the individual cost of these items, its a great deal. Just DDR2 800Mhz ram cost quite a bit more than the older 667 stuff.

Unfortunately with all those good things to say about the machine, I cant believe its still the same color :( I thought that ugly orange color was for the BB models since its the same color the gateway uses.

Seriously tho guys do the math, the real version of the machine is much better the BB version is a farse not even using a new Montivina CPU/Ram

Also the Screen on the G50V-A1 & B1 I bet is the same as my C90S and its like the best screen out there. Try to upgrade your BB screens :p

G71V will feature a higher grade GPU than G50 (I believe), which is a 9700M GT. It will likely be launched in the August~September time frame. AFAIK, G71V will only be sold in channels.

No words on the price yet.
