    It will still work without the bracket. You can improvise a bit by adding foam around the HDD if you want it to be more secure.

    Just foam? Thats it? Sounds iffy but I would like to back up all my DVDs so I guess foam it is.

    How does adding a second hard drive affect battery life?

    The second HDD should be off unless you are loading a movie from it correct? So if you arent loading anything from it, it should have the same battery life?

    A 2.5" SATA notebook hard drive typically uses 2-3watts; this translates to a few minutes in battery life and definitely shouldn't be anything to worry about.
