So I yanked off the piece of tape that covered the gpu/cpu fan to find out that it was not a vent, just a design......The mesh looking design is fully plast. The only way you can gain somewhat airflow through that vent is by ripping off the tape and the chrome ring, giving you 11 tiny holes...

As discussed in many reviews, the circular "vent-looking" object on the underside is purely decorative. Removing the tape and crome covering will not improve airflow and in fact hinder the circulation. The air will now bypass all the other vents where it's really needed and circulate mainly just around the fan.

It actually dropped my gpu and cpu temps by 3C. Raised the hdd by 2 only leaving it at highest 42C.

Well, given that the circular "vent" sits right above the fan which is right next to the GPU, it may have some affect on it, however all your other components may not benefit from this additional vent you've created. I would double check with your CPU, GPU, HDD, and chipset temps with EVEREST or SIW on idle and load to see if it really does help.

I'm using hardware monitor and everything remains the same with gpu being a bit cooler. Hdd was only affected by 2C as I said before. My friend has a sager np 8662 and his one fan is directly fed through the panel and his gpu and cpu temps are amazing about 10C cooler than mine but his hdd remains 12C hotter than mine... So his design has inspired me to make a custom mesh grill where the circle circular design is, about an inch in diameter where it meets the fan.

Here's an image made by Vicious to better illustrate what's going on...

What Motok did was he uncovered the decorative vent and noticed a slight decrease in his GPU temp while his HDD temps increased. By uncovering the decorative vent, it will limit air circulation throughout the entire chassis, especially to components further away from the fan, hence the increase in his HDD temps.

saw that vent when I installed my extra hdd and was able to figure out what it was for by looking at the design and the inside. vicious' picture above shows the same I was able to figure out that the vent creates a vacuum that allows air to flow over all of the components, instead of just the ones close to the fan.

The tape is to block the heat above the fan helping the air flow through the fan quicker

Do you notice any chance in temperature in the RAM?

nope same temp. I actually ripped off the plastic meshing which was glued on underneath the vent for the ram.

I suggested that the NP866x people cover up their vent. Someone with an 8660 actually tried and his HDD temps became "normal".

Yea but their gpu and cpu temps are amazing. The hdd can survive 50C.

Another thing I remember from the M860TU business was that the palmrest got uncomfortably warm). I'm not sure if anyone figured out whether this was from the HDD or from some other component.

@ motok, any perceivable increase in temps anywhere else on the laptop, with and without the external cooler? (Off topic, some success was reported on lowering M860TU HDD temps with newer Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers; your friend can give that a try if he hasn't already done so)

I even said in my review that there was nothing under this and it was a thermal barrier.

It actually helps in lap gaming comfort by blocking the heat at the hottest part of the notebook.

Yea I'll give him that idea because his laptop is just a fireball where the hdd is.

And clutch I never fully read the post lmao >_> I tend to skip when the thread is very long.

I had to Ctrl + F "Vent" to find it myself.
