Hey, I have beeen having an annoying problem with my laptop in the past couple of weeks, It freezes (sound repeats itself and mouse does not move - total freeze) for a second or two once every two hours or so on average, but its extremely random as I did not have a single freeze yesterday and the laptop was used more than 10 hours.

My temperatures are fine, checked using HWmonitor. It happens even if the cpu/gpu is not under load.

I also hear something "turning on" when it happens, not always but mostly, I'm not sure but I think when the freeze happens I can hear something started spinning, so I thought my DVD was causing it but I disabled it (from windows not bios) and it keeps happening.

I did S.M.A.R.T (and other) checks using Seagate tools and my Harddrives are fine. I also checked all partitions using checkdisk utility of Windows Vista 64, and this was the 2nd option for something "spinning".

Today though, I got my cards shuffled again as I was streaming a video using a p2p program when a relatively long freeze happened (3 seconds) and my display turned blank, then the OS restored itself and said the video card stopped working.

I have collected the following info on the last crash:

I thought I might have to update my BIOS but I said I'll leave that as a last resort because it's scary. And what worries me is that the latest crash might not be the same as the usual ones so I might actually have two problems.

I have the latest video card drivers from Nvidia.com.

    Thoughts / solutions?

    this might help.

also, as I asked in that post: are you cleaning your drivers in safe mode with driver sweeper before installing new ones? if you are, and you still get this issue, you might have a failing GPU on your hands.

186.81 or 186.82 will do. (I'm assuming you have 186.81 already installed, since you say the latest from nvidia. so try 186.82)

OK, I have uninstalled my driver from control panel programs and features, restarted into safe mode and cleared everything with that proggy, booted into OS and installed drivers 186.82, restarted again.

temps seem higher a bit but that wont change anything i guess

Thanks but the changes are negligible it was 54 at idle now its 58 and about the same under load.

I'm using the computer now until the morning, so I will know if the crashes were caused by the gpu or not

the problem is that if the freeze is not long enough the os does not report anything.
