Which one do you think is better?

I can get either one refurbished for $729...

I think the x1 is better because its processor is a little faster... other than that, are they the same?

I think the X5 has a larger capacity battery, but I could be wrong. I've heard they're very similar in terms of performance.

The are pretty much the same although the X1 has a slightly better processor but the X5 has a larger 9cell battery vs the X1's 6cell battery.

I had the same choice a couple months back. I decided I kept my laptop plugged in most of the time and the extra battery life wasn't worth it.

I also favor the blue on black look with silver base versus the orange and blue lightning motif.

X1 is what I went with.

    Hmmm.
I think the x1 looks better too, the blue is much better than the yellow texture.

A 9 cell battery would fit on a x1 right? I might just buy a spare one.

    Edit:
    On a second note,
You can buy the blue cover from Asus for $35, and if the battery on the x5 is a 9cell, i might just go with that.

I thought that they were selling the G50vt-x1's at tigerdirect.com, but I don't see them there anymore. Post a link if you can find it.

They still have the X5's there, labeled as G50vt-X5-RF (RF for Refurb most likely) They're down to $719.99. Through bing.com->"Dvd burner" search->(Link to tigerdirect.com's burners)-Laptops you still get that 10.3% cash back, so 719.99-74.16= $645.83.

Great deal if you don't mind waiting the 60 days to get that cashback honored, pretty good deal without. Might want to consider that if you dont mind that 100mhz drop and the crazy cover.

My G50vt-x5-RF should be getting to the house today or tomorrow, I'll post my test findings.

THe g50vt-x5 has a 6cell battery. I emailed tiger direct and they said its a 6 cell.

    Also, mwave.com sells the g50vt-x1 and x5. And jr.com sells the g50-x1

Did you buy your x5 from tigerdirect? Let me know if it has a 6 cell or a 9 cell battery.

    If it has a 6 cell battery, I'll go with the x1 from mwave/jr ... ;]
    Thanks

Sure thing. Most reviews like clutch's note that it is 9cell, but the cheaper price might have came from their reduction in the battery post-refurb. I'll let you know. If its much different than that of the BestBuy's new g50vt-x5 I'll make a new topic so we can share results.

Initially I was going to order the brand new one from best buy because it was only $850, but it's not available for shipping, only in select stores... and like none of the stores in a 2hour radius or maybe even in the whole state, around me have it... haha

so did you order yours from tigerdirect?

Yes I did. Got here in two days with the 5-6 day ground shipping for $2.. not too shabby. Although I live in PA and I think it shipped from IL.

I have it turned on and everything seems to be going normally. I'm going to see about connecting to a network.

The battery looks like the clunky 9-cell from Best buy. How do you tell for sure? With the whole thing plugged in it reads 0% for the last few minutes.. not sure whats going on there. Does it have to be turned off to charge?

Edit: Yea now its charging after I realize there is a lock thing to toggle at the bottom. Duh.

The version is A33-M50. I put that in google and it tells me its the 9-cell. It also looks like the 9-cells for sale, exactly. I'm pretty sure its 9-cell.

Jebobek, should I buy a X5 for 849$ CND or wait for the G51 (is its ever comes out in Canada, expect the A1 at 2000$)?

I want to replace my desktop (i play L4D, HL2, and maybe GTAIV) and i'll bring it with me to University. So no big gaming. But I want it for at least 2-3years.

Also, what is the warranty on refurb ones?

The only probs is the screen resolution, not the best for Computer Science...

GTAIV is rough on most laptops that aren't quad-core, but you can pull off other newer-ish games.

I'm guessing you deciding if you want to go cheap or go future-proof for a couple years? If you decide on the more expensive and a better monitor, I think people are suggesting the Sager NP8662 over the A1. Note that it still might not play GTAIV well, but that's just how the game is.

    http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8662-built-clevo-m860tu-p-2564.html?wconfigure=yes

I went cheap because I'm not replacing the desktop. This laptop is meant for me be able to run a few games I enjoy while I'm visiting friends. I don't have a need to push Crysis onto it. When the big Blizzard games come out I'll manage to play them on the desktop; I don't expect too much from the G50vt-x5 I have now.

So you'll have to ask some other Comp Sci folks how beneficial a screen upgrade would be. Come up with a price range and post on the "What laptop should I buy" forum with your thoughts, and I'd bet you'd get alot of good suggestions.

I don't plan on playing big games. Just like you, I just want to be able to play a few games, if I have times between homeworks and projects. For the resolution, at home i will use an external monitor.

For the sager, i'm in Canada, so no Sager/Clevo. Forgot Eurocom, too expensive.

Its a great bargain, cheap price. And we (Canada) usualy don't get cheaper model. I mean, no store is selling the X model, just A/B except for Newegg.

My only concern is the waranty? Do you still get the 360? Even if its refurb?

    Thanks!

Yes, for 30 days you can return it or exchange it for another one. On that page where you can hit the return/exchange buttons, there is the note:

IMPORTANT: Prior to returning or exchanging an item, we strongly recommend that you contact Asus. For technical support, please contact the manufacturer at 812-282-2787 Option 3

But I'm pretty sure you can return it for no reason.

I'm really tempted to buy it.. can't decide between the x5 or the sager 8662
I kind of want a bigger screen resolution, and the sager seems to be more stable
but then again the g50vt-x5 is like $720 xD

okay after giving it much thought i decided on the asus g50vt
but then i couldn't decide between the x1 and x5, the x1 surely looks a lot nicer, but the x5 comes with a 9cell battery and is available on tigerdirect with bing cashback...
    then i found this

    http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=4923

:D im going for the x5, and ill maybe replace the lcd cover with the one above.

    expect some reviews! :D

I've been pretty happy with mine. Played WoW for a bit on top of a NC2000 on my lap. Temp got up to 75 which is nice.

The only odd thing is the heat spot to the right of the asus emblem below my screen. Not sure what is going on with that. I'm wondering if anyone else gets that.

If these are the two laptops offered by Tigerdirect.com I'd also point out that the X5 has a 9800GS vs the X1's 9700GT

    The X1 I see listed is a G50VM not a G50Vt. Or am I missing something?

    tigerdirect doesnt have the x1

you're looking at a different model.

How's the LCD screen? I read some reviews that said it was really bad or something like that...
