I was browsing the internet earlier with Firefox on battery power and suddenly the internet became disconnected. I noticed that the "wireless console" icon had a red x on it. Since I had to go out, I turned off the laptop and decided to deal with it later. Tonight I tried connecting it again with the same problem.
I usually don't use the function keys. I may have accidentally hit function-F2 earlier wow browsing the web, but I don't think so. Now when I press function-F2, the wireless console flashes in the middle of the screen showing it as disconnected. Then it disappears quickly. Double clicking the icon does the same thing. If I right click the icon, I get two choices. The first one is an enable/disable UI toggle. No effect. The other option is "about". It shows the version number but does nothing when clicked.
I'll probably take the laptop back to best buy tomorrow and have Geek Squad take a look at it. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Yes I have one : do you have a hard switch on the front of the laptop, like G50v-ak043k has ?
I sometimes accidentally toggle this little button, and I always wonder what's happening. -
Thanks Stouf. That fixed it. I would have never guessed. I wonder why Asus decided to put a hard switch there? Everything else is soft touch except for the power switch under the LCD screen.

I avoid using the hardware wifi toggle - the same switch on my sister's Compal HGL30 broke in the off position so she was without a computer for a week, good thing it was under warranty.
G50vt-x1 wireless console froze
