How much time a G51 (with i7, Q9000 or P8700) can last on battery?

    1. With the minimal screen brightness.
    2. With the WIFI connection OFF.
    3. Using only Word.

(alternative question : is a G51 appropriate to take notes in university classes (2:50 --> 3hours))

don't expect battery life in this machine. You won't be able to use this computer for more than 1 hour 30min.

I get max 2 hours with G51-RX05 when just using word. Thats with the 6-cell battery. I think with the 9-cell it woudl give you around 3 hours, maybe a bit less.

I don't use it in that mode, but got 1:57 before shutdown (5% left) when testing like you wrote. I'd expect the 9-cell to give 3ish as well under same circumstances. With the "battery saver" mode built-in (wifi on, brightness 60%, general web browsing), the deck indeed gets an hour and a half to hour forty-five as fuyuki said.

G51 and battery life should not be used in the same sentence. Oh wait...

Thanks! Does anyone know where to get a 9 cell battery (I live in Canada)?

Also : does the P8700 seems a better choice for battery life?

The battery life on this deck is short for sure, but I've never gotten less than 1.5 hours so its not *1hr bad*. Of course, I've never gamed with just battery either so...

The i7-720 throttles down to just over 15w when doing light to medium workloads, so its actually less stressful on the battery than the P8700 in those situations, I'd guess. Give it any real work, however, and you're absolutely right.

I've been monitoring it with CPUID Hadware Monitor for the past week or so and its always drawing 15.34w when doing light work or idling (unfortunately, also when GPU is pegged - it drops down to 15.34w on the G51J). Have some screenies up in this thread:

Holy cow... thats outrageous. I'm sure theres a universal brick out there somewhere that costs less. Radio Shack maybe? I know I used to have one from Kensington but its wattage only went up to 80-90 iirc. 19v is pretty high as well so who knows.

Is a universal external battery as efficient as the ASUS 9 cell? Looks pretty cool: I didn't know that even existed!
(what's even cooler is that I could split the cost with the hole house since they could use it :))

    ASUS 9-cell - 7200 mAh
"BIGGEST UNIVERSAL EXTERNAL LAPTOP NOTEBOOK BATTERY USB" $150 - 9900 mAh

According to the seller, the external battery has biger capacity than the 9-cell battery.

Other batteries there are 6600/ 7300 mAh etc.

So overall they are similar to the capacity of the 9cell.

    my 2cents

    I get around 2 hours on my G51 vx-A1 ; Q9000 processor ; doing what you said.

I don't think its appropriate for class at university tho...
    Think about it,
blue lights ; what if prof dims the lights thats just... uh unecessary attention
not only thats I've done it ; its a pain to lug around especially if you have coursework for multiple other classes in your bag for that day.

For school just get an extension cord :p there are an plugs most places.
But just for web/note taking I would get a cheap netbook, these notebooks are desktop replacement gaming machines.

I don't think I'll bring asus g51 to class. I brought to my discussion class once and people were looking at me/my laptop. Make me uncomfortable. I now bring my old asus v6j to class and leave g51j at my apartment.
