Does the second hard drive bay for the G51 include the necessary "caddy" (structurals) to hold a second hard drive or do you need to buy a caddy separately?

There is no caddy installed, but there is a bit of foam that holds it pretty firmly in place. It is only a temporary solution though, and you would be best off buying a caddy for a couple bucks from the asus estore.

the G50 chassis is the same as the G51, so most parts on it will fit the G51.

You'll be missing some screws, though. You only get the screws that connect the bracket to the computer, not the screws that secure the HDD to the bracket. You'll have to get new ones or borrow ones from the stock HDD.

Does this mean I could replace the lid casing with one from the g50?

Correct, Asus just started (I believe since July) including the 4 screws that secure the caddy to the laptop. Before you were stuck finding them yourself or calling ASUS Parts. Enough calls prompted them to be pro-active and make the change to include the screws. Now since not every HDD excepts the same screws (although they are pretty universal) ASUS didn't include the screws to secure the HDD into the caddy. I believe this is two fold, one its because just like the caddy screws they just didn't feel it was their responsibility but more so it is because they didn't want to expose themselves to the risk when someone over torques a screw too deep (because it was 6mm in length and the HDD can only do up to 4mm) and they ruin their HDD. Most HDD come with instructions that indicate what type of screws are needed (example, X25 G2 = M3 .5mm x up to 6mm iirc). Problem solved with a trip to the local hardware store metric screw isle.

Yes the $7.99 Epart is the same and many have purchased them for cooling modding.

He meant the actual lid, not the bottom panel. the actual lid is 35$ iirc. but yes, it should be compatible. *edit* its 80$ lol http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=5076&catid=606

Yeah, I like how the "plain" one is more expensive than the plain black one. Weird.

Does anyone happen to know how you would go about changing the lid?
