Just got home from my trip today and I'm setting up the G51 as my desktop replacement. I plugged it into my LG 24" Monitor and the desktop looked fine. Not quite as sharp as when my desktop computer was plugged in but ok. The desktop was running an ATI 4800 series card with digital output. But when I tried a game I saw a lot of small horizontal lines. It was playable but very annoying. I tried several different games with the same result. I went to dual mode and started a game and it looked good on the laptop's monitor but I still had the problem on the LG.

I played around with settings in the games and the refresh rate but same result. Since the digital video cable can't be used with the G51 I found an analog cable in the closet and used that. No telling how old it is, that's the only thing I can think of that might be causing this? I'll get a new one tomorrow unless someone can think of something else to try.

Are you running custom mod drivers?

No, just the latest video driver from the ASUS website. The laptop display looks fine when gaming. This 24" LG will do 1920x1200, just slightly more than the G51. I'll get a new cable while I'm out this morning and see if that helps.

Most likely it is the cable. If you can run a HDMI-to-DVI to power the external monitor. I have a Samsung 20" that only has analog, and depending on the cable I get black streaks in the picture. The laptop's internal display will be interfaced digitally, which would explain the good picture on the internal but bad on the external.

Thanks, I didn't realize you could run HDMI to DVI. I bet that fixes the problem.

Now the question is do I pay about $10 and wait a week for it to come from Newegg or do I give BestBuy $50 this morning for their seriously overpriced one....
I could overnight it from Newegg and still come out cheaper but if it doesn't fix the problem returning it is such a hassle.

Yep, the HDMI to DVI cable fixed the problem. Luckily I checked my local Wal-Mart, amazingly they had a Philips brand gold plated cable for $30.

We need to add this to our "tribal knowledge" of the G51, if you're going to connect to a large external monitor it needs to be digital.

Thanks again newswami, I didn't even know there was such a thing as a HDMI-DVI cable.
