Any idea whether DDR3 memory would work with the G51?

Unfortunately, DDR3 ram will not work on the G51 (only DDR2).

If the G51 you are using has DDR2 then no DDR3 will never work on your model. Use CPU-Z to check what type you have. You have to upgrade to the same type of memory you have, ie. DDR2 -> DDR2, DDR3 -> DDR3.

If for no other reason than architecture. DDR2 is 200-pin interface, while DDR3 is 204.

Just know that while DDR3 has a little bit lower power consumption, it really doesn't improve difference much compared to DDR2.

There is really no reason to have to upgrade to DDR3 or only buy a laptop that has it.

Cannot work then pins are different.
