When I first received the laptop (and after reinstalling the OS Once, and installing drivers) I kept getting the Lightscribe control panel popping up in my system try, however, now that I actually have purchased lightscribe discs, every program I try tells me it detects no lightscribe capable drives. I'd be rather irritated if this DVD drive was -not- lightscribe capable after paying extra for the lightscribe discs.

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Asus preinstalls the lightscribe software in many their systems, from the same HDD image (has for years), even though they have models whose drives lack LS.... this question pops up every couple of months from someone wondering why they have the software but not the hardware.
Go into Device Manager, or look at the cd bezel -- unless you see lightscribe there, you probably have a model with a regular DVD drive (no LS).
Sorry. -

I like SharpieScribe better.

Well at least I found my 5 year old HP apparently has a lightscribe drive, so the extra couple bucks isn't completely wasted

yeah, I actually was confused initially as well... didn't think it had it, but then saw all the software, and then thought it must. As, like you, my other HP had it. So, got me too ha!
G51 and lightscribe.
