Ok the G51vx-rx05 has 3 inputs on the right side. The left one is the mic, the middle is the audio input and the right is the spdif/headphone output jack. That's what the manual says.
What exactly is the middle audio input jack for? I thought I could connect both headphones and speakers using the middle and right jacks but the audio input jack doesn't do anything if I connect speakers to it (sound continues to come out of laptop speakers).
If I can't use it then I guess I'll have to use a 2 in 1 adapter.

input===input. putting sound INTO the system. THink about it for a second, what would you want to use to put sound INTO the system. Why would you expect headphones and speakers to use Input and OUTPUT jacks?

Why? Because reviews say different things.

The only thing I can think of to put sound into the system is a mic, but there already is a mic jack... -
The middle jack is mic in (check your reatlek panel)

Ok I just tested and yeah the middle jack is the mic..
So Asus made a mistake? Because they've labeled the left jack as the mic on the laptop AND in the manual...
Wth...so if the middle jack is the mic, then the left jack is the audio input? What exactly do you use this for? I think a 2nd headphone output would have been better..Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -
The instructions in the manual are wrong. The 3 audio ports:
1. Audio out
2. Mic in
3. SPDIF out -
um...thats not correct David. the last one is ALSO a mic, I'm using it in skype right this very second. iirc...audio out (headphones) and spidf use the same jack

Not that it's your fault or anything but why on earth would you need two mic jacks?!
Here's a pic of the jacks on the laptop. They're pictured just like in the manual.
I just tried plugging my mic into the left 'mic' jack but nothing works. It says 'you just plugged a device into the audio jack' but in audio devices under recording, the 'line in' says unplugged (it says plugged when I plug the mic into the middle jack).Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -
put it in the mic jack and then try saying something in sound recorder (under accessories in the start menu) its easy for me to tell because my mic is of a much higher quality than the one in the system itself (which is automatically turned off when you plug the new mic in)

Ok it's working but now this is just confusing. Ok to clarrify, the left jack IS for the mic, but it is NOT the line in device under audio devices>recording. This is for the middle jack which is the line in jack.
The middle jack you say is also for a mic? I just tested and the mic won't work in it. Won't detect my voice. The line in device under audio devices>recording does become 'plugged in' but that's only because there's a plug physically in it....same thing happens if you plug in a headphones or speaker plug. So I'm still wondering what the middle audio input/line in jack is for.
What made me really confused initially was the fact that my M1530 has 1 mic jack and it says 'Microphone/line in' under audio devices>recording (i.e. the M1530 combines the two whereas the G51 separates them). But if they're meant to be the same, but the mic won't work in it for the G51, what exactly is this jack for? -
possibly external sound cards?
G51 audio input..what's it for?
