CPUz shows that the processor overclocks a little bit, but the FSB and RAM speeds stay the same: with the G50, everything increased.
Can anyone recommend a better overclocking program? I'm only worried about the bottleneck for the stock processor, I'm going to be switching it out in a few months, maybe for a fancy new quad.

Direct Console was the only overclocking utility on the G50, power 4 gear managed power profiles, I know some other models got overclocking support from turbo gear.
SetFSB, its a bit manual but thats how we overclock PLL is ICS9LPR604AGLF and the speeds wont show right itll show 200 mhz for 266 etc etc, check with CPU-Z. I am working on a direct console replacement for other models the G51 will be supported under the included support for the G50, will pretty much work like Direct Console on the G50 but uses SetFSB int he background.
The speed step is part of the bios the processor will downclock itself, as far as single core overclock like on the T9600 thats also not controllable. -
I just want to make sure, when you replace the 2.0GHz CPU in the G51 and put in a P9700 or a T9600, you still will be able to OC yes with the same PLL?

The clock generator is part of the motherboard until u change the motherboard to something different thats not changing.

I'll try out SetFSB later tonight and see how I like it. I'm just glad the GTX 260 doesn't have any reason to be overclocked. Overclocking the 9800GS wasn't easy. -
in short, yes!
it overclocks to 2154. -

Method1 - Install Nvidia's control panel add in and overclock it!
Check out this picture - http://i34.tinypic.com/35jxd0m.jpg
It even allows for CPU overclocking on some systems!
Method 2 - Edit the bios
From 100% scratch not even using exostenza's thread:
- Download HP USB Format Utility (had it for other unrelated things)
- From same page download windows 98 boot disk files
- Download GPU-Z and NiBiTor
- Download nvflash
- Download and install dox 182.05 or whatever you like, to be honest ive run the overclock on everything including the stock driver.
- Dump Bios with gpu-z
- Open bios with nibitor change extra voltage to 1.11 and edit to 600-800-1500 and save
- Format usb drive pointing the app to the win98 bootdisk files
- Copy nvflash and both bios
- Reboot machine, press escape during boot and select the flash drive
- type "nvflash newbios.bin"
- press y, let it finish, reboot.
Besides with the GTX 260M in the G51 being underclocked, why dont u see a reason to atleast return it to specified clocks?
As for my comparison of difficulty installing windows 95 is a particular pain in the butt over 98 because the cd is not bootable and the setup program will not partition and format the drive for you requiring two boots and some work before you can even start the installation. Past that it just took a really long time assuming you didnt have other complications, like getting your cdrom drive to be recognized and or the mouse.
G51; does Power4Gear still work?
