I know this is going to sound stupid, but does anyone know how to disable the automatic numlock on boot with the G51J? ...I did look in the bios config screen but either I'm blind or there is no such option there. Any other ideas, please?

I am too lazy to reboot into windows, but on annoyances.org ( here) someone said that it remembers the previous setting on shutdown, so if you turn it off and shut down, it shouldn't come back on. According to that post. Or you can mess with the registry.

I always turn it off and leave it off so unfortunately that's not the case. I'll look into the registry though.
anyway this is right from boot, before windows even loads, so I doubt that would be a windows-based solution...

hmmm if I remember the next time I go into windows I'll give it a shot. It does turn on for me no matter what at post but once the os is loaded it turns off. In the meantime maybe someone else can come along with a solid solution. Cheers.

Sorry for the double post, but I'm in windows now and have rebooted a few times. W7 seems to remember the last setting for numlock on shutdown. If I turn numlock off after it has been on and shut down or reboot, it turns off the next time I get to my desktop. And the opposite is true.

The registry tweak has no effect (and my default value was also 2147483648).

Numlock always comes on at boot (POST), then once the OS begins loading it turns off, and around the time the Welcome screen appears it goes on again. But then it restores the setting when I get to my desktop, if it was off before shutdown it is off, if it is on before the last shutdown it is on.

So give it a try. If it doesn't work there must be another way to "force it into submission" as the OP said on annoyances.org (since there is no preference for it in the keyboard control panel anymore). ;)
