I am currently a Dell Studio XPS 16 owner but am looking to get rid of it and purchase a G51JX-X1 from newegg. Is the laptop really worth it? Ive been looking around seeing it has some BSOD issues and throttling, i see the throttling is fixed but is this a fix by asus or some program i use to fix it? And is the BSOD fixed or still being worked on by asus? It looks like a nice laptop but just want to be sure its worth it. Are there any other issues with this laptop or is this the only one? And is it good for gaming? Please let me know i really am interested in this laptop but dont want to suffer if it has bad problems.

    Thanks

The BSOD issues doesn't seem to affect everyone and seem to be quite random, but don't worry, ASUS is trying to fix it. However, the biggest problem with this laptop for me personally is the webcam, which drops to like 6FPS when I use Skype. Other users have reported this in MSN and other applications too.

At ~15" the MSI GX640 seems like it will be better than the G51JX, but I can't say for sure until I've seen it reviewed.

The gx640 doesn't have a 1080p resolution display. However it does have a dx11 compatible DDR5 GPU in the ATI HD 5850. You can also get the GX640 with a core i5 for $1,099 and you can upgrade it to a core i7 if desired at Gentech. The G51JX only has core i7 options starting at $1,449. There's also some other small differences like how the Asus has a backlit keyboard. Also because they are from different manufacturers the build quality may be different I'm not too sure about MSI's reputation while for the most part I hear good things about Asus. It all depends on what you're looking for in a laptop.

Well the only things kind of preventing me atm are the throttling and bsod, but i see the throttling is fixed, but the bsod still has issues and one with freezing now....

I've been on a quest for the perfect laptop for about 3 months now. I've narrowed it down to either the g51, g72, or the g73 (all Asus, go figures). Out of the three, I keep constantly concluding with the g51. But now I'm having second thoughts, as I've never heard of this BSOD problem before...

Maybe on Xoticpc but on Newegg the g72 was $1,200 I believe. It doesn't appear to be on sale anymore however.

BSOD is no big deal. Since the Beta bios I have not had a single one. Throttling exists not just with ASUS but dell as well. i7 is very power hungry and its a measure to keep thing alive, its also an intel thing. Like anything win7 right now and new i7... it will be a little time as drivers get officially developed, not just for the Gseries but other mfgs as well. The good news is ASUS is on top of it.
