    Hey,

ok, yesterday I finally convince myself that now it was the time to get this laptop. A friday night, perfect for playing around with it.

Unfortunatly, this didn't happen! I'm experiencing two problems that are driving me nuts.

    1- Wireless issues.
The first startup I did, Windows asked me to configure/connect to a wireless network. I saw a nice list, with mine in it, but decided to skip it because I wanted to see the laptop and didn't want to go get the security key. After checking around, I decided to connect to my network. Hum, well for some reason, no networks were detected. After checking in the device manage, I saw that my wireless adapter had an error saying "device cannot start". Win7 troubleshooting told me that it was a driver issue. Well, I have the latest. Then, the device disappeared. I tried recoveries 3 times, no luck. Then, frustrated, I left it alone for some time, with no battery and no power. When I started it again, I was able to see the wireless adapter installed and saw y network. But while I was typing my security key, I lost it again like the first time. What's wrong??

2- The welcome sounds of Windows 7 are extremly noisy, choppy. The rest of the sound seems ok (music), but it looks like when the laptop is making something, like starting Win7, the sound gets extremly bad and distorded. Anybody has that issue too?

    Thanks for your help

Uninstall the wireless driver from Device Manager, then install the latest drivers from intel.com. Or you can try removing it from the motherboard and reinstalling it!

Try reinstalling the sound drivers too!

wow, thanks for the quick reply. Do you know what to look for at Intel? The device is no longer listed in my device manager, so I don't know what to look for...

I think it should be an Intel Centrino 1000 or something like that if you haven't opted to upgrade to a Intel 5300 or 6100. You can try refreshing the list of devices in Device Manager, maybe the card will be listed as Unknown Device.

doesn't refresh. If I remember, I think I saw Atheros ARxxxx for my wireless adapter. Is this Intel?

    EDIT: AR9285

Will opening the backpanel void my warranty? I don't want to try it if it does...

1.First check your Wireless switch at front then your Fn + F2 to enable the wireless devices ( ATK hotkey and ATK drivers must be installed )
    2. Are you using Loudness equalization effect ?

Theres a different spot for that driver on the asus website..i went through this.. Make sure you reseat it on the mobo as well.

goto asus web site>United states>Services>support>Download drivers bios etc> in the drop downs select 1- notebook 2- drivers 3- wlan then select win 7 64 bit OS
your looking for version 8.0.0.238 for win 7 64 bit, note the first one you will find is the 32 bit, use only the 64bit that the A1 comes with.

    Hi,

thanks for the info. Going in the G51Jx model, there is no version 8.x under "wireless". There was a driver v12.x. I noticed that on the DVD coming with the laptop, it's written G60 (and not G51, don't know why). So I tried that and I saw your v8.x driver version, called Azurewave or something. I'll shutdown, reslot the card in the mobo and then try agian. I'll write after.

If any of you has a suggestion for the sound too... I tried Asus drivers and not improved the situation...

I decided not to touch the hardware and will wait for the ASUS tech to do it on Wednesday. Kind of scared to play in that beast.

I tried Intel drivers, Atheros, nothing is working. I also think I found the problem for my windows sounds being noizy/clipped. When I play with the wireless (like updating the driver), it looks like the load from trying to make it work clip the sound and the mouse.

You know, like in WinXP, when a PC was connected to a domain and you disconnect it on startup, it could hang some minutes because of the network. Well, that's what I think I'm observing. Because I tried to load the laptop with many operations at the same time (USB transfers, HDD too, wired Internet, etc) and everything was smooth. But when I start windows and there are wireless problems, mouse motion is definitly clipped and the sound is plain awful.

I would like to get the opinion of people on this, I'm in no way a guru of computers configuration. Please!

    Thanks.

Got a call from the repair shop. I'm getting a totally new laptop. The ASUS tech told me that the problem was the motherboard (which probably explain all the glitches I saw). Hope this new one will be ok!

To be Honest i know its not the motherboard, its the wireless module that was bad. This is how you know when a specific hardware is failing.

I think they said mobo to you so that they wouldnt need to explain more to you.

In the tech support biz. We use the mobo excuse to shut up people that ask annoying questions (that is to us) no offense.

haha, maybe. He told me though that he took the wireless card from the demo laptop and the problem was still there.

Anyway, I tried the brand new laptop yesterday and it is great. No mouse or sound problems, wireless is A1 and the little machine is a beast! Apart from my bad luck, I'm very impressed.
