Hey everyone, I really need help with temperature problems :\ . I've searched the forum and I can't really find a direct answer.

    I have had my G51VX (P7350 @ 2.0 Ghz, GTX 260M) from best buy since august 09. I haven't OC'ed at all.
Recently I have noticed my temperatures are really bad.

As I type this my idle temps are:

    GPU - 82C
    HD - 40C
    CORE0 - 49C
    CORE1 - 48C

About 10 minutes ago, I was playing Mount & Blade and my GPU skyrocketed to 105C..which is obviously VERY dangerous. I am also running the gpu on the newest drivers from nvidia.

Right now I am buying thermal paste for the GPU and CPU.
I need help finding a laptop cooler under $45...

Other than that, I don't know what to do about my temperatures. Help please? :(

Your GPU temperature is high at idle mode. The CPU and HD temperatures are
also high. It is a must to buy a good cooler. I can recommend you several models:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N=2030260319 50001400 1276817102&name=Enermax

Those two from Enermax are not the best, but they are at affordable price.
If you want something better you can consider this one:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834991042

If you want another one model from Thermaltake I can also recommend you
this one, but it's more expensive. I have this one, and it's really very good.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834991039

The last one that I can recommend you is this model:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834982005

This is currently the largest cooler available. For your notebook don't buy
small and short coolers like this one:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834999707

This is very cheap made, and will not have the effect that it should.
The thermal paste for CPU and GPU is also important. You can consider
Arctic Silver 5, but in my opinion first, and the most important thing is to have a good cooler.

Get ICD7 thermal paste. Reduced my GPU temps by 11C.

Regarding coolers, I use this one

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997727&Tpk=notepal x2

Reduces the GPU temps by a few degrees...not much. But I'm sure it'll do a much better job once I've modded the spare backplate I bought as the cool air will be able to get in more. Something you might want to consider.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=411871

You can also consider adding copper blocks to your heatsinks which reduced my GPU temps by about 5C.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=414147

    See my post on

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=407012&page=11

You should also undervolt your CPU if you haven't already. Doing so will lower GPU temps since they share the same heatsink unit.

I would suggest also doing a thorough cleaning of your fan and heatsink.

Exactly. It's more likely that the sensor is reporting high temperatures than the video card itself ... but it is nvidia, after all...

The thermal paste solution might help, too. But if you're in warranty and the problem is consistently replicated, maybe you should send it in for repair.

Your processor temps are fine, everyone i know with the g51vx w/ the 7350 processor has around your cpu temps. But your gpu deffinitly needs something :p. Getting a cooler will help, but I'm letting you know your cpu temps are perfectly normal

do this... it will drop temps a lot.. also try

    1. Undervolting the CPU using The Undervolting Guide found on the forum.
    2. Get a notebook cooling pad like Zaltman NC2000.
    3. Get offiicial 195.62 NVDIA drivers and try the below riva tuner tweak to undervolt GPU in a safe way... helps a lot in dropping temps.

those GPU temps are not right and my guess is you have a bad seating with the heatsink. A cooling pad will not solve your problem, as I have the same machine and even with an upgraded and overclocked CPU, my GPU runs way cooler.

If you are comfortable with working on computers, replace the thermal compound on the GPU with some MX-3 or ICD7. MX3 is what I used, and is really easy to work with. All I did was run a good bead down the length of the GPU and let the pressure from the heatsink seating spread the compound as needed. There is a pretty good sized gap between the two on this machine, and MX3 worked MUCH better than Artic Silver 5. But, I've also heard good things from ICD7, so take your pick.

If you aren't comfortable with this, then I'd send it in for warranty repair, as a cooler will only be a bandaid. My bone stock G51 from BB had no heating issues and did not run as hot as yours is, even before I started modding it.

I cleaned the inside and put new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Unfortunately, these are my idle temps:

I am also using a Thermaltake Massive23 CS cooling pad.

Did you lift up to see if u even made contact w/ your gpu i know this destroys the bond you had but i had the same issue. I was putting the paste on and using soemthing to get the processor covered. The old fashioned small dab in the middle worked 100x's better cuz it actually made contact.

It really does look like your GPU isn't being cooled properly. If it had gone defective, it probably wouldn't be stable.

I have undervolted my CPU, did the "dab" method with the thermal paste, and my temperatures are still the same for the GPU. My CPU temps have gone down 10C but that is all. I don't understand why my GPU temps won't go down.

I too had this same problem, the standard thin layer doesn't work on our G51's, as there is too big of a gap, and the heatsink isn't perfectly flat to the GPU core. So, a nice good bead of non condutive MX3 or similar works great, as it squishes and makes good contact, and any extra doesn't cause any issues as it is non conductive if it did accidentally ooze a bit too much.

When I was using AS5 and a thinner method, I was idling high and hitting 105+ like you are. Once properly seated and applied compound, temps idle around ~50, and max load is mid to upper 80's.

I know you are going to yell at me for this but...
Where is your GPU in relation to the computer?

I have always been into AS5 but i think im going to get some mx-3 because of the dramatic temp drops. My gpu doesnt hit over 87 and usually stays at 80 while intense gaming it just has to hit that point for the fan to start up. Cpu idles at 46 and gpu around 48, so hopefully better temps :p

    Have you activated the powermizer?

If not, do it, otherwise, your GPU will be running with full clocks even in simple 2d applications.

MY CPU and HDD iddles with the same temps as yours, but my GPU iddles in about 59c.

After doing the RivaTuner tweak, to use it as an alternative of Powermizer, my GPU temps dropped in about 3c, even when gaming.

Is it worth to buy AS5 or MX3? How much the temperatures drop usually?

ICD7 reduced my GPU temps by 11C. It's not hard to apply. It may be thicker than most but you just have to put a big blob in the middle of the core and let it spread out naturally. Easy as that..

I did the rivatuner and powermizer fixes and they didn't do anything to in-game temperatures. Although when idle, I am at 60C, which is a big difference to what I had before. In-game temps are still crazy...is there ANYTHING else I can do?

I modded my bottom plate my drilling tiny holes in the fake sub woofer along with adding holes above my CPU and GPU. I also use MX-3 and my GPU idle temps hover around 48 and on full load it will go up to 88 but stabilize at 80. My CPU which is a T9600 idles at 25 and maxes out at 58. All in all I am happy with the mods and MX-3 paste.

I forgot to add I am using this cooler which I think is awesome. It is super quiet. I don't even know its running.
