I have two questions and sorry if these are asked in any of the threads before.

    1. How much of a difference will it make if the 4GB DDR2 in the G51-A1 be replaced by 4GB DDR3 ? How expensive will it be ? Is it worth it ? Is it easy ? Where can I find cheap DDR3 RAM ?

    2. How easy is it to change the DVD super multi drive by a Blu-ray combo drive ? How much will it cost ? Where can I find a cheap Blu-ray combo drive ?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. you cannot change DDR2 out for DDR3 the modules will not fit. As for cost DDR3 is about double plus the cost of DDR2.

    2. Easy change, I believe the unit is held in by one or two screws and its plug and play. Ebay is usually the best place to find inexpensive BR/DVD writer combos. I think Linuxguy posted the model that came in his A1. Depending on the interface you can find them as cheap as under $100. This next to an HDD add or swap is the easiest upgrade to do to a laptop. I think the hardest part is switching the exterior door panel as they are held on with pressure clips and you dont want to break them off.

    1) I don't think the motherboard supports DDR3 ram. It is not much of an upgrade since DDR3 has very minimal voltage and performance gains over DDR2.

    2) It should be pretty easy considering that you can upgrade to it

If it costs twice as much and doesnt improve the performance as much then may be increasing the RAM would be better way to go about it.

Does the G51 support more than 4 GB ?

If there is a chance of breaking something then I think I will get it customized from a reseller.

Not positive on whether it supports more than 4 GB but the G51 only has 2 RAM slots meaning that you will have to buy 2 x 4 GB RAM sticks to get to 8 GB which will cost alot for a performance increase that really isn't too great.

Just stick with the 4GB for now and upgrade later when 4GB sticks are cheaper

Regarding the processor, I would think its possible through the Asus included overclocking program but I vaguely recall somewhere that SetFSB doesn't support quads or something like that.
