I have done a search here as well as google and the answer looks like a No. Just hoping someone has found a way to turn off the lid lights.

Bump it should be an option. Pretty useless feature that just helps suck up battery life.

On battery power the two side lights shut off. Only the middle Asus shield is always lit.

Yes, that should be able to shut off as well on battery power.

Does it really drain all that much power, though? I don't see it draining any more energy than, say, the collection of button-icons above the keyboard.

I mean, sure, it would be great if you could get every last bit of power out of that puny 6-cell.

Anything that runs draws power... And yes we should have an option regardless if this note book has a 6-cell or 10000000-cell the options should be there.

Bug Clutch and Predator to get IDC done, then. I know I don't want to cut any wires.

I wish this was an option and just want it off when I watch movies or game at night and don't want to keep people up with the light on the outside lid lights although the screen would still keep them up anyways.

no need to cut the wires, just pull the plug :p i cant find the thread via search though. it was in the lcd panel, almost directly above where the OLED is (or was on the g51). it turns all the lights off.

i think you are refering to this guide. it will walk you through to disconnect the lights on the g50v/g50vt series. i think the wiring is the same on the g51. im not completely sure.

Thanks ChinNoobonic. If anyone is brave enough to do this on the G51VX-RX05 and post up pictures or tutorial that would be cool.

its fairly simple, pop out the lcd bezel and you will see two hookups on the left side of where the asus suymbol would be. one says left lcd the other says right...there you go

still though, like forge was saying, a software method would be a lot less risky. Even though its simple to take the lcd apart, one cant help but be a little nervous toying around with a new laptop . . . IDC will rock!

I'd REALLY appreciate it if someone found a soft-way to turn these lights off. They are pretty ridiculously bright in a dark environment if you ask me.

I believe it was this thread.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=383177

I really hope Asus would update some software to turn off/control the lights but if not, I might have to perform the surgical procedure. :mask:

Oops! didn't notice the question was answered.

Yes, software would be SUCH a better option.

I started trying to figure out how to do it in software*, and realized I never wanted to see them again, and wrote that guide. I'm sure it's possible -- but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. :(
