If I put a T9600 into the RX05 would I not have a better performing laptop than a stock 15" Macbook Pro? Or is there something that I'm not taking into account... like the quality of the logic board or something?

I intend to dual boot Win 7 and OSX and I would like to expect equivalent or better performance than a Pro.

I realize the RX05 has a lower res screen and uses DDR2 RAM, but that's of no concern to me.

The G51VX-RX05 with a more powerful CPU will murder the Macbook Pro in performance. Not only does it have support for Quad Core, but the system memory is expandable up to 8GB. Plus with the price difference between a Macbook Pro and the ASUS G51, not only can you afford to upgrade the CPU, but you can buy a higher resolution screen. The only thing the Macbook has going is the light weight and portability.

    OK.. that sounds reassuring.

I'm in a design school that highly recommends buying a Mac. But with the money that I "save" from buying the G51VX-RX05 (roughly $800-1000 !) I can upgrade the RX05 CPU and 8GB of RAM (for my design programs, not gaming) and still have money left over for an SSD (or two!).

You can upgrade to 8GB RAM on the Mac too.. if you have $1000 to pay for it, lol!

So yeah, screw the macbook. I'm getting the RX05.

If you're considering to perform many upgrades on the G51, also consider purchasing one from a reseller such as GenTechPC. Many folks in the design industry tend to favor a higher resolution screen, so that may also apply to you when deciding to purchase the Best Buy G51 Vs. the reseller G51.

Keep in mind that replacing/upgrading your CPU will void your manufacture warranty.

I'm in Architectural Science and in my program there are quite a few people who own Macbook's, but in all honesty when deadlines are close and everyone is scrambling to get work done, I find myself at ease being able to render at higher speeds. Sure the thin Macbook design is more easy to carry around, but aside from the fact that the G50/51 is actually the size of a 17 inch notebook the weight of the machine isn't that much. Actually I find my G50 (almost identical to G51) to be lighter than my 15.4 inch ASUS laptop. So overall with the G51 having a better graphics than my G50 I think you should even have better results.

Any serious work would be done while I'm connected to my 24" monitor at home. I can tolerate the low resolution screen for the purpose of my classes.

There is also an option here in Toronto for me to upgrade the screen for under $200 if I decided it was becoming a problem.

Does asus sell the 1080 higher res screen for the G51 separately? I didn't know that... Where can you buy them?

I agree, the two are not even in the same class. Its like a middle weight trying to take on Ali; its not even fair.
