Which one is more worth the money-

I would rather buy the cheaper one but I really like the 1080p and 2.53 duo processor of the X1A. Which one is the better buy?
-
I think the 300dlrs difference is worth it, as you will get a better screen, processor and warranty.
You will definetly enjoy more the X1A than the RX05, but both are great laptops.
-
I agree with ryzeki, I just made the same decision last week. Opted for the X1A:
-more speed
-much better screen res
-better warranty (2 years P&L/1 year accidental vs. just 1 year P&L)
Once you add sales tax (BestBuy) and even just a 1 year BB accidental warranty ($99) you're getting pretty close to the X1A's price. Make it a 2 year BestBuy warranty with both coverages ($279) and you're past the price of the X1A after tax. -
Yeah with the much warranty and sales tax I'm most certainly going to get the X1A. Thanks for the comments.
-
Not to mention you are getting BB's crappy Geek Squad warranty not the ASUS 360 plan and iirc BB does not offer any Accidental Damage Protection.
If you are set on the NewEgg Exclusive X1A then don't forget to go through BING for cashback making the difference in price between the BB model even tighter and even more of a "no brainer". -
Well I took a look at the bing savings thing and at newegg you only get 2 percent or about 25 dollars so it isnt really gonna make a difference right now. Do they increase the cashback percentage often?
-
Pretty sure we were offered at least some kind of accidental damage protection when we got my RX05.
-
you can save some money by using bing cashback too. I would definatly go for the X1A. The high res screen, better processor, and real Asus warrenty is totally worth it
-

But the RX05 is oh so mod-able.
-
I can't find G51VX-RX05 on bing.com. It seems like ASUS G51VX A1 is the one available
-
the G51VX-RX05 has been replaced by the G60VX-RX05 and the G51VX-X1A has been replaced by the G51VX-X3A (only change is windows 7)
-
Lol i sent in my receipt and i got the 360 asus warranty, i dont know if i got lucky but i got it lol
-
how is the RX05 "more" mod-able than the rest? it the same notebook model, just different components within. i wouldnt be calling replacing the crappy C2D with a better C2D, voiding ur warranty in the process, as a positive "mod" when u can start off with better warranty and better highly-OC'able CPU in the X3A. and yes there are officially 4 forges.
-
The stock warranty with the g51 is pretty much useless, so modding it has little effect on the "warranty" from worstbuy.

On top of that, you're all dirty pirate hookers.

Oh so exploitable.

We're all dirty pirate hookers, I mean.
-
the bestbuy one isnt workin anymore.. so ...k...does some one know the differences between the two besides the different shell
-
where can i find a g51vx rx05 i only found it refurbished from buy.com
-
the G51VX-RX05 is discontinued so you will only find refurbs.. $800 for the refurb is fantastic value though.. just bought one myself
-
Lol best buy sent me two of the same laptops on accident and had no recognition. 3 months went by and no calls and i even told them that i had a second one. Wasnt charged and the same invoice in both packages. I got off the phone with them and they said theirs nothing they can do so its mine lol and its a brand new g51vx-rx05 so ill probably put it up in the selling section
-
haha NICE! how much are you going to put it up for?
-
u are one lucky sob!
free second laptop? hell yea! -
Brand new G51VX-RX05 you say? I saw a few in stock still at my local Best Buy on clearance for $700 so anybody else that's trying to look for it try checking out your local Best Buys.

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
You got to be sh*tting me. You're one lucky guy, bobbyp. -
what happened to the juvenile behavior that is bypassing the language filter? but you do speak the truth, there are a lot of ppl that struggle to gather the 1000USD required to buy that kind of laptop (or are maybe 100-300USD short on budget) and you just get it for free lawl.
-
Seriously? Are you saying that you mailed Asus your receipt to register the product? And they just automatically gave you their worldwide 360 Two year warranty?
I just bought this laptop from Best Buy 3 days ago. Got in on the clearance for $699. I love it and I'd love to get that warranty for it since it does run hot.
Thanks -
I know this isn't a G51 but I stumbled on this today and thought I'd add the link here since the price and specs are in the same ballpark.
Asus G71GX-RX05 Laptop Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 17.1" WXGA, 6GB, 500GB HDD, HDMI, Webcam, Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64-bit - Refurbished - $763 w/ Bing @ Buy.com
Just thought someone might be able to use it to get a good deal on that laptop.
-
Is the G51VX-X3A capable of a RAID? I'm also debating getting a G51VX-RX05 or the X3A. I'm REALLY nervous with refurb'd stuff though.
Also, how big of difference does the screen/CPU make? Does anyone know where you can see a benchmark comparison on those two models? -
yes, the X3A is capable of raid.
-
I bought a G51VX-X3A this morning. My BP is still high. This is the first computer I've ever bought myself; everything else has been business phase outs. I'm finally going to have a computer that can easily handle a game made in the last decade! WOO HOO!
-
The 1990's?
That laptop is good for the next quarter-half decade (provided you tone down settings accordingly).
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The heck's a quarter-half decade?
I kid, I kid.
But yes, this computer can handle plenty of future games -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
What? That's like saying a Double Quarter Pounder instead of a Half Pounder.
-
actually, I believe thats like saying a half half-pounder instead of a quarter pounder =P.
-
Or a half quarter pounder......
I'm pretty sure he/she meant quarter decade to half decade, as in it'll be good for at least 2.5 to 5 years from now. Either way that's what I was hoping. I just checked my tracking number and it's been delivered!! WAH HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be able to start using tonight, but I probably won't be able to devote some time to games and what not until sometime within the next couple of weeks. The whole, wife, kids, house, and church volunteering thing.
This is an awesome forum. I've been pouring over it for weeks and it's really helped as far as getting me familiar with what I should be doing to get my machine running well.
Speaking of which, I'm always hearing everyone talk about benchmarking software. Which ones are the best to download and are they free or do you have to buy them? Since everyone is big on heat control for the G-series laptops I figure I'll probably want a temp monitoring program.
Also what about the benchmark programs that give you a little ticker in the corner? (I probably sound like an old lady trying to buy an iPod)
Thanks in advance! -
gggrrr, i go to the us in january to buy a laptop, atlanta.
i would buy a refurb for 800 for sure, but if they dont have them i will no doubt end up with the i7 version. im dreaming but hope to god they have still have a few of the $800 g51's -

--CPU-Z 1.51 is good for getting information on your CPU and monitoring voltages and clocks.
--GPU-Z gives all kinds of info on your graphics card.
--HWMonitor is the go-to program for general current-min-max temperature monitoring.
--EVGA Precision is useful for monitoring your temperatures while in-game.
--RMClock and CrystalCPUID are useful for undervolting your processor. RMClock also gives you a nifty monitor in your taskbar
--Furmark is a popular GPU stresser.
--Orthos or Intel Burn Test also are good CPU test/stress programs, though IBT is "harsher" than Orthos from my experience.
--OCCT contains both CPU and GPU stressers.
All of these programs are free. -
I would like to add:
HWmonitor not only checks the temp of the CPU (each core), GPU, and HDD, it also checks the wear on your battery.
NiBitor is what you'll want to use to undervolt the GTX260M, check out TevashSzat's awesome G51 optimization guide for more info. -
I'm assuming undervolting will lower the system's temperatures too, right? Is it an exact opposite to overclocking or is it a supplament to overclocking? I read the guide, but to a nOOb like myself it's still a little confusing.
And I tried poking around the HWMonitor site for a readme/how-to-use file so I was wondering about some of the particlars about using that software... (I did like the battery info it gave)
First off, when I open it up W7 keeps asking me if I'm sure I want to run it. I'm sure I can turn that off, but this is my first OS since XP and I'm fumbling around like crazy. But I digress............. I noticed it gives me a min max avg, but over what time period are those calculated, and is there a way to adjust that if I want to?
I didn't have much time to poke around, but I did have firefox and the trial version of Word freeze on me and I couldn't even kill it with my task manager. That was really annoying. Then again I was using my laptop while on my lap, but I was watching all the temps and they were all below 60C. Weird..... But again, that's the reason I'm asking about the HWMonitor particulars.
My new baby is going to go thru a rough learning curve with me, lol. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
It be be both the opposite and supplement, actually.
In general, undervolting will lower the amount you can overlcock, and overclocking will lower (or raise?) the amount you can undervolt.
Some CPUs, though, are good enough that you can get a decent overclock while using a decent undervolt.
If you want to focus on overclocking, overclock first and then lower your voltage until you find the right balance. If you want to focus on undervolting, undervolt and then raise your clocks until you get a good balance.
The current temperature is, well, current. Min and max are calculated from the moment you open the program. You can reset those values by doing View -> Clear Min/Max.
By the way, kill off User Account Control, which is the reason Windows keeps asking O RLY??? YOU SURE YOU WANT TO USE THIS PROGRAM???? RLY RLY SURE???
Try a reinstall of Word. Shouldn't be doing that.
Download GPU-Z and monitor your clocks. (Make sure the "Keep monitoring while in background" checkbox is checked.) Make sure you're not staying at 500/1250/799 clocks all the time.
And... hold off on NiBiTor for the time being. It's a bit advanced for someone who's asking the questions you're asking. (With all due respect). -
So I answered my own question after I got some patience and just watched it, but thanks anyways. =P BTW my GPU idle's around 60C and then jumps to just shy of 80C before the fan comes on. From what I'm seeing in the forums, that's about close to normal right?
I tried doing it last night, but again Win7 is totally new to me since I'm coming from XP and I never touched Vista, and then my wife dragged me away from my toy. That's ok though, cuz she's pretty.
So on this one, I called tech support cuz it was buggin' the hell outta me and it seemed to be caused by two anti-viruses running simulataneously. I had installed one before uninstalling the other and [according to tech support] that was the main cause. We'll see....
I'm assuming it should be bumping up the more I'm stressing it?
I'm so totally O-ffended right now....... I'm a newbie. I'm honestly suprised you guys are being this nice. Hopefully I won't be an inquisitive idiot for too much longer and you won't be asked for simple answers.... =P
This is my first non-business hand-me-down PC, so I'm a late bloomer. Maybe I'm comprable to a fine cheese. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
If you're playing 3D games, yeah. If not... well, I'm not so sure.
See, I'm using a system that's fairly well modified/optimized, both in the hardware and software department. When I was using Win7 Aero, I my graphic card clocks would sometimes jump to full-on gaming clocks and raise my temperatures to mid-60s. So with an unmodified system that might be normal.
However, that's not good in any case. Prognosis is that you're not downclocking on your GPU.
(On a side note, I ditched Aero and went to Win7 Basic with a modified color scheme. Runs cool).
It's in Control Panel, and easy to do. Unless she was [insert erotic inference here] you could do it in ten seconds.
Yes. However, were you getting consistent readings of 500/1250/799 while just surfing?
What video drivers are you using? GPU-Z should tell you.
I knew essentially zero about laptops, and not much more about hardware in general when I came to this site. And while I wouldn't call myself knowledgable even know, I know much, much more than I did when I first joined.
You will learn. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Looks normal to me.
I made my installation of Seven feel like 2000.
The best anti-virus is a properly tweaked OS.

Liar. You said it was common sense. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Common Sense is the old version before it was bought by another company and was renamed Properly Tweaked OS.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
If it was acquired, does it mean Common Sense is useable with PTOS?
-
don't think they are compatible Forge. Different socket.
-
SWEET! I won't shower for weeks and just roll everyone over with my red onion stench.....
So I ended up getting myself one of those cheap lap desks from BB and without a fan my CPU is holding steady at about 31C and the GPU hovers between 61C and 68C.
Once I get a couple of games on there and some frame rate benchmark software I'll come back to undervolting and overclocking depending on how well the games play.
In the meantime, I'll be lurking in the background like that weird guy at the party that nobody invited.... -
So I've got some fps using FRAPS for C&C General: Zero Hour (I know, it's an oldie, but goodie) and I was only getting about 25fps. Is that low for such an old RTS and am I doing something really wrong here? Do RTS's get bogged down because of all the units moving around?
I haven't really done any optimizing. I did remove some bloatware and I shut down all other programs. I had the visual detail set to high on the highest resolution, but I thought I'd get at least over 30fps.... PC specs in the sig
On the plus side, I don't think my GPU got hotter than 70C w/o a fan.
