    Hey Guys,

New to the Asus world, last laptop was the Toshiba in the signature, but bought a new Asus G51 from Best Buy last week.... Love the thing, is a GREAT machine, but am having a problem that is both driving me nuts and makes me wonder if I need to exchange the machine before the 14day return period is up:

When playing games (Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is the WORST!), I get constant crashes, ie, Black screens that freeze and a yellow icon on the taskbar that says my Display Driver has stopped responding... the game will continue after a period of time, but it's incredibly annoying and ruins the game experience. I have searched and found a few post about this issue, but wonder if it's a totally common problem with these Asus machines, or mine is just a dud... I've had the same problem while playing Brothers in Arms, Call of Quarez Bound in Blood, Flight Sim X, Frontlines Fuel of War, etc.... it happens unfortunately very regularly, and since these are all games I played on my Toshiba with SLI 8600GT's no problem, I'm quite confused.

I have tried multiple drivers, hoping that was the problem... stock Asus Drivers, Nvidia 186.42's, 186.31's, and 186.81's and they all have the same problems... is this a hardware issue? Very frustrated, but love the laptop, so trying to solve this problem...

This is all at Stock clocks, did try a brief minor overclock, but had similar issues as with stock settings.

Should I return this unit and demand a new one? Have it setup and happy other than this one problem, although it is a huge issue for a gaming machine that can't play games without constant crashes.

When not crashing though, machine runs well.... very confused?

Sounds like a bad GPU. You should return it/ exchange it.

You haven't altered the vBios have you?

Before returning you could also try to restore to factory defaults using the recovery DVD, in order to eliminate any chance of a software problem.

I used to have exactly the same error message while playing games on my G50VT a while ago, but it happened just once in a while, not regularly. There was a thread here not too long ago discussing this problem, i have seen lots of ppl here have the same problem, maybe u can search a bit and see if u can find some useful information in there.

Strange thing is the problem seems to be gone by itself, and i am not even sure what i did to eliminate this, i havent encountered the error for quite a long time.

no, haven't changed the vBios, and hardware wise it's all stiock except for the addition of a 500GB WD drive I had laying around that I installed in the 2nd bay... planning to install a Q9100 CPU, but waiting to do that until I make sure the laptop is ok first....

but yeah, all stock, have tried multiple drivers using driver sweeper between installs, and have the problem consistently with each driver... if it was a once a week thing I'd just roll with it, but as it stands, it's an every 15 minutes thing with Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway.... granted, don't know how well coded this game is, but didn't have this problem EVER with my Toshiba, so confused.

Just trying to figure out what to do... local best buys are sold out, but I can drive 1.5 hours and swap it out, wanting to make sure it's definitely a hardware issue before I take off work early and do that.

Thanks again!!! Looking for any input!

The BB G51s don't support quads.

What? Really? I read in the review here by Sunny that they do, in fact he included a link to an ebay seller that he recommended..... is this not true?

Reguadless, is this machine a turd that should be swapped, or is a software issue? Any ideas? How common is this problem?

Sunny wrote his review when the G51 first came out; however, since then forge and a couple of others have tried putting a quad in the G51 and it didn't work. The BB G51's MB is a different revision than the A1.

I would first do a recovery using the recovery disks like E.B.E suggested, and if that doesn't work return it.

Been testing some more, and here's the error I get... have run 3Dmark06 3 times, gotten this error twice, and a score of 8600ish the one time it succeeded.

I would recover, but hate to lose my setup and go through that hassle again if I am just going to return it.... have driverswept between installs, currently running the Windows Update latest drivers that were just released. Thanks.

8600-ish at stock is about right.

I'm not liking those errors you're getting. If you get them once, okay, big deal. Constantly? Indication of problems if you've gone through the usual fixes already.

Download it from Microsoft is always your best choice... Guaranteed no virus and the files working 100% ( sorta of )...

Anyways, did it fix your problem ?
