    Hey Guys,

I've just picked up a brand new Best Buy version of Asus G51Vx. The machine is great but the processor seem to be lagging behind compared with today's standards.

I have an extra Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.53 Mhz) laying around and I thought I might upgrade my beast. I have the following concerns:

    1) Does it void the warranty?
    2) Will it generate much more heat, cause overheating ?
    3) Is it so noticable performance wise?
    4) Overall a go or waste of time ?

    Thanks,

    1. Yes
    2. Not much more heat, only a little more, also depends which processor u choose. If its the 25W TDP then, there should not be any ehat increase. But the CPU which you specified is 35W, so it will generate some more heat. You should be looking at up to ~10*C increase during stress.
    3. Well in Windows environment, not really, but in games especially (GTA4, CRYSIS) the performance increase should be notticed.
    4. IMO sell this one and get a T9600 (or better), however at best get a P9700, because it has the 25W TDP which means it will not generate more heat then the processor you have atm.

It really depends what is your main priority is when using the notebook. I would assume its gaming, so when playing newer games, a faster processor should help. But rememmber when you chnage to a higher TDP CPU, it will decrease the battery life, and as mentioned earlier generate more heat. Therfore it would be appropriate to at least change the thermal paste and at best undervolt the CPU (But this will decrease its overclock ability)

    Hope this helps.

    1) Im not completely sure, but Im pretty sure it will with both Asus and BB. I dont think either of them is one of the companies that allows you upgrade your CPU.

    2) It will generate more heat due to being a 35W CPU, but as for overheating, I dont think so since the same system also supports the Q9000, which is a 45W CPU.

    3) In game, it would depend on whether or not your CPU is causing a bottleneck, and if it is, how much of a bottleneck its causing.

    4) This is more a personal think that pertains to what you think. For me, a T9300 would be much better than a P7350, since Im quite sure a P7350 would bottleneck me based on the fact that my T7700 does. Basically, if you need a higher end CPU, then upgrading the CPU isnt, if you dont, then it is. At least, thats my opinion on the matter.

I think there are those warranty stickers located somwhere on the CPU heatsink, and if those are ripped or simply taken off then it means the user has done something to the hardware and the manufacturer/ retailer can use this fact to void the warranty.
If you take a look at this photo it shwos the sticker on the CPU pad. (took the pic from Sunny's review)

1.) A user in the G51 thread already confirmed his warranty was void because he took the heatsink off.

2.) A 35W TDP CPU will not overheat

3.) It will not be very noticeable. You will see a difference in synthetic benchmarks like 3dMark06 but in normal gaming its not going to be much of a difference. Chances are you will bottleneck the GPU before you bottleneck the CPU. Will you see a frame rate increase? Yes and no. Yes, you will if you are already running a game at 60+ FPS because at that speed the CPU will be pushed to the limit. At 25FPS you will almost certainly not be pushing the CPU to the limit and thus you will have no gain.(Higher FPS = more calculations done by the CPU --- Lower FPS = less calculations done by CPU)

4.)Personally, I would install the processor since you already have it. I don't put much weight on a 1 year warranty.

    Thank you all for replies.

I've decided that for now I'll stay with the old one, and than upgrade to something in line of P9700 in the near future ( I first have to pay off G51 ;) )

Thanks again, you guys are the best

i had the same processor for my fx since the first one i got has the wimpy one that was like 1.3 or 1.8 or something. Best buy said they could install for $50 and keep warranty (though i had their extended so might be different). However, it had startup problems and they eventually took it out and gave me the 7811.

Anyways, if the guy at geek squad seems good with computers and they say you'll keep warranty, you could go for it.

What if you get that G51 model from Xotic and ask them to swap with P9700 and also apply Arctic Silver? Would that void warranty since Xotic is an authorized dealer?

Anyone have any idea how a XQ9300 would work on this machine.

Heat isn't an issue for me, since I use a cooler, and neither is battery life, since I plug this guy in.

I'm just worred about any structural or BIOS compatibility issues.

I could always go with, say, a Q9100 or Q9200, but I might as well get the best I can get.
