I have been planning to go RAID 0 in my coming G51j, but I have seen questions about whether or not there is a RAID controller installed in the notebook.

    From this source, NO RAID:

Go for the raid, you'll get added performance.

I will be going for it once I have confirmed that there is a raid controller...
The question is I saw several people asking around if RAID is supported or not, and some gave negative answers

Yes its supported, at least on the G51VX so I'm sure the G51J will have it.

    are u serial????????????

whats the point of putting two separate drives in there. Id preferred if they stuck a large 500gb 7200 drive in there and left us a free space for an ssd while reducing the price a bit too.

The point is for jerks like me - replace one of the drives with SSD for OS & apps & important stuff and leave the second one for music, videos and data.
SSDs like the one I have (Intel X25-M G2, 80G) is enough storage space for OS & apps (maybe some games as well) while it delivers the performance well ahead of 2x 7200 rpm HDDs.

Dual HDD bay on G51 is what I need to get rid of external drive. :)

(I would better like if they shipped it with one 500-640 GB drive rather than 2x 320 GB - will need to sell one!)

Wow that's a pretty big feature to leave out. Yet another cost cutting measure by Asus I guess.

Like I said since there is no raid they should have just put 1 large 500gb 7200rpm drive in and left the other caddy open. Which saves us some coin for a nice ssd :)

As a general rule, the G5(x)-*A1* series implies 2 internal hard drives. The fact that it's not RAID-capable is a big minus for those of us who enjoy RAID.

If you're wanting a G51J with only one hard drive so that you can populate the other hard drive compartment with SSD, be patient. I suspect it's coming. Just a guess ....

I don't know personally, but I found this. It seems to be that there is some kind of software RAID in Windows 7. I'm sure others can help you a bit more.

Yes, via Disk Management. I don't think you can raid together a volume to use as the boot volume though..via Disk Management. You'd need to use a third party software to accomplish that. I know it can be done though.
